New publication on internal police demand! As 2024 is coming to a close and most of us are preparing to celebrate the new year tonight, I will remember this new years eve due this article being published. I would love to share it with all of you, as this is my first scientific publication. In this study we introduce a novel method for measuring internal police demand. We use individual time estimates from Dutch detectives, nested within eight frontline-teams, of the activities that take place after an incident is reported. Such as, reviewing CCTV footage or interviewing a suspect. We present this method, inclusive of preliminary findings and a breakdown of the variance at each level of the data. In addition, we present the current and potential merits this method holds for police practice. I was very lucky to work with such a great team of co-authors, a big thank you to: Sam Langton, Harold van Voornveld, Koen Kraassenberg, Stijn Ruiter and John Duivenvoorden of the NSCR & Netherlands Police. Public data, long term records, and government transparency. Although I have been fascinated by data for a LONG time, moving into data science was triggered by this site. It is quite remarkable long may it continue. Having access to this data helps inform citizens. One limitation is that ready access only covers a 36 month period. Beyond that time frame, the only place I know to get the data is from my colleague Dan Lewis's ukcrimestats site. He has been rigorous in posting the files. If you have influence with the Home Office, police or government, please encourage them to give easy access to the entire data set which should go back 15 years or more. Why is this important? 36 months doesn't allow all outcomes to be completed. In addition, crime is complicated and any snapshot is just that. A modernization would be interesting that shows progress from report to investigation to investigation completion to prosecution (if any) to court outcomes. In the current public data, each subsequent stage makes the view of the previous one disappear. In addition, perhaps look carefully at ways to separate violence from sexual offences. I understand from the site this is done to aid anonymize the data. Maybe decrease spatial resolution or something similar to allow the public a better view of this class of offence. https://data.police.uk/
