"𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗.𝗘.𝗜.!" If you’re like me, you might have thought something similar. It makes sense, right? Robotics is just math, and math has nothing to do with social issues. But after years of working in robotics—and earning a Ph.D. in it—I realized I was wrong. Robots don’t exist in isolation. We build them to help people, and 𝘩𝘰𝘸 we build them determines 𝘸𝘩𝘰 they can effectively help. You may have seen reports of self-driving cars struggling to identify children or darker-skinned people. These failures aren’t accidents—the robots are doing exactly what they were programmed to do. If the engineers designing them don’t consider the full range of people a robot will interact with, that bias gets built into the system. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲?
