Building Courage and Trust: A Powerful Team Challenge Hourglass Experience Our recent session with Facilitators Network Singapore, as part of their Community of Practices and also the inaugural commencement of their 20th anniversary, explored the power of choice and the importance of creating a safe space. Participants faced their fears and pushed their limits on our thrilling 24m Team Challenge Hourglass, a first-time experience for everyone. The Journey 1st Experience: Participants tackled a series of initial challenges, with some initially considering dropping out. However, perseverance paid off as they completed three elements to unlock the next stage. The Dialogue on Safe Space: This facilitated discussion opened up feelings and explored what a safe space means to each individual. Interestingly, the group concluded that even in unsafe external environments, a sense of safety can be cultivated internally. 2nd Experience: Empowered by the dialogue, participants faced their anxieties and actively made choices to feel safe. They pushed themselves further, with some even conquering two additional levels before reaching the summit. The Jump: The final challenge involved a leap of faith, much to the surprise of the trainers! A remarkable 90% of participants took the jump, showcasing the human mind's incredible ability to regulate emotions and encourage us to do things we might initially shy away from. A Powerful Learning Experience: This session proved to be an eye-opener for everyone involved, including the facilitators. It highlighted the importance of choice, open communication, and the power we hold to overcome fear and build trust within a team.

How could I forget the experience of your being on my interview panel in late 2017 for the job at ACC New Zealand to head the Māori and Cultural Capability Team, leading the Māori Strategy. In the interview you asked me "Do you think ACC is a racist organisation?". BOOM! Right there! There it was. What a FABULOUS question to be asked up front. My answer located ACC in organisational practice shaped by consideration of historical, structural, and epistemological factors, informed by statutory mandate. My prospective Manager was on the panel. His greatest fear - which he shared with me in the final coffee we had before I was offered the job - was that I would listen to you. More than to him. Pfft! That was a no brainer! As I told him at the coffee I was raised to listen to my elders - no job would change that. I listened to both, he and you. I was sure you heard me and valued what our team had to say as part of the continuum of our intergenerational Māori consciousness. You were so on point in the advice that you gave ACC. And the people who tried to block what our team planned only blocked us in the short term. With your support, the team vision prevailed. We got to work together at ACC - you advising the CEO directly, me advising him from an L3 role. (At that time there were no Māori on the Board or in an L2 role). Having you in your role as Strategic Advisor was the game changer for Māori Development in the organisation and for us as Māori staff at that time. We got rongoa funded by ACC under your watch! I have no doubt that this would not have happened but for your role and influence. Others had tried, many times before, without success. If there were strategic meetings that I wasn't at - or things you thought I needed to know - you just told me about them. No secrets - just kaupapa driven action. Every time! You were magnificent in your advocacy and support. The photo is of us at the Whanganui ACC Māori staff hui in 2018. You had advised me that it had been about ten years since such hui were held and they needed to be held again. We put a briefing paper up early in the New Year and got approval to hold them in early June, so long as they were all completed by the end of that financial year, which was June 30. So. Hui were planned. Then the kicker: the team was not allowed to fly in the North Island. In one week we drove from Wellington, to Whanganui, to Hamilton, and then to Auckland - holding 4 hui. You were furious at the conditions set around the holding of those hui. We got them done, set up to fail or not. Ko koe he tauira tūturu! Always. Straight and true. I will treasure your legacy and the memories we shared forever. Rest in eternal love, with your beloved George. Love and respect always.

Together, they’re paving the way for sustainable change through organized and inclusive advocacy. Key takeaways from their approach: 1️⃣ Unity in Action: By joining forces, these NGOs strengthened their voice for more effective advocacy. 2️⃣ Eco-Friendly Development Plans: Rather than opposing all development, FPH proposed sustainable options, showing that nature and growth can coexist. 3️⃣ Political and Media Support: Backed by local leaders and media, FPH increased public awareness and government accountability. 4️⃣ Consistent Coordination: Regular meetings ensure aligned goals and strong communication within the coalition. 5️⃣ Inclusive Public Outreach: Multilingual campaigns break barriers, ensuring diverse communities understand and support their mission.

Every industry, especially those as cutthroat as media, operates on a foundation of trust. In the early days of my career, when new ideas were met with skepticism, it was consistency that built the bridges. By consistently producing content that was not only innovative but also respectful of local sensibilities, I gradually built credibility. This credibility, painstakingly earned, opened doors that were once firmly shut. My open secret to almost 15 years of maintaining relevance, in the media space is consistency, innovation, and authenticity, and I’ll be sharing this tomorrow with the Global Shapers Ibadan community.
