The #IndianElections are a spectacle, yes. But they are also mind-boggling in their sheer scale and logistics. Consider this. At 970 Million VOTING population, it is greater than the TOTAL population of the US (336M) and the European Union (450M). Moreover, each constituency will have a different set of candidates and collections of parties. Unlike in the US, an Indian citizen can stand as an independent. In our constituency, there were 21 candidates. This number changes from constituency to constituency. Which means that each set of EVM machines has to be calibrated differently. The names of all candidates have to be stuck on the relevant EVM machines for that constituency. Think of the logistical challenges! The EVM machines show who one has voted for, and there is a 7 second wait till the sheet drops. There are some three officers who check you are who you are before you can vote. So, the chances of messing with this system are pretty bleak. There is heavy police presence, one policeman outside each room. There is no way to hack this. And then they say democracy is backsliding in India? I think India should offer to host elections in other countries. Given the populations of most countries, it will be akin to holding district elections in India, for the most part. Even the US elections would be like having elections in the state of UP. And what's more, we will tell you the results within a day. And NO hanging chads etc. :-)
