𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 is in large part a function of autonomy. Autonomy from geopolitical shocks, oil and gas supply disruptions, and price volatility, which have all become dangerously normalized over the years. Russia's weaponization of fossil gas is only the most recent such example. 👉 Today, 𝟴𝟲% of the global population live in countries that are net importers of fossil fuels. 👉 In contrast, 𝟵𝟵.𝟴% of the world's people live in countries with renewable energy potential. The recent IETA European Climate Summit, which I was able to attend, played a crucial role in highlighting this often overlooked challenge of decarbonizing Europe’s industrial sector while maintaining its competitiveness. A Hungarian “climate institute” attending COP29 is an offshoot of an Orbán-backed think tank funded by the state oil and gas company. According to the official UN list, CPI director Mónika Besenyei, head of secretariat Csilla Gajer, three researchers and three “students” all attended as part of Hungary’s “overflow” delegation. My latest article for The Times of Central Asia: Central Asia’s Increasing Profile in Global Climate Policy [link to full article at foot of tweet]. Summary: Between 11 and 22 November, COP29 will take place in Baku, with Central Asian countries actively integrating into the global energy and environmental agenda. Countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan have committed to reducing methane emissions and contributing to green supply chains. Kazakhstan, in particular, plays a central role in the nuclear energy sector and holds 12% of the world’s uranium reserves, making it a key player in both regional and global energy security. Uzbekistan is advancing solar and wind energy, while both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are involved in Rosatom nuclear projects. Central Asia’s integration into the global green energy shift is also highlighted by the region's rare earth elements, essential for green technologies. Kazakhstan is leading with 56 rare-earth element deposits, and Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are gaining attention for potential deposits. The Trans-Caspian International Trade Corridor (Middle Corridor) is central to Kazakhstan's green supply chain strategy, offering carbon-reduction advantages over the Northern Corridor via Russia. In 2024, Central Asian states adopted a "Regional Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation," fostering collaboration to tackle climate impacts until 2030. Kazakhstan's multi-vector energy policy continues to balance relations with global powers while positioning the country as a key player in nuclear energy and renewable technologies. The region's cooperation on environmental issues, such as water management and desertification, further strengthens its engagement in international climate initiatives. Bulgaria’s delegation, led by President Rumen Radev, focused on key priorities at #COP29 in Baku last week: ✅ Climate Finance: Pushing for a new, multi-layered goal to mobilize funds, including innovative sources like fossil fuel reallocation. ✅ Mitigation: Strong commitment to using diverse technologies for climate action, including nuclear and nature-based solutions. ✅ Adaptation: Prioritizing ecosystem preservation and regional cooperation on adaptation in the Balkans and Black Sea. Bulgaria is also pushing for а Just Energy Transition, with a commitment to phase out unabated coal by 2038 and explore new green industrial policies. #COP29 #BulgariaClimate

With COP29 officially underway, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged impressive new climate targets for the UK. Speaking at the conference in Azerbaijan, Starmer announced that the UK will cut carbon emissions by 81% by 2035, forming one of the first national plans on cutting carbon, known as “nationally determined contributions” or NDCs. To support the transition, the government has announced a significant investment programme in homegrown British energy – including renewables, an expansion of offshore wind, carbon capture and storage, and nuclear power. There are 640,000 green jobs in the UK, growing at a rate four times faster than overall UK employment, and this renewed commitment represents an encouraging step from government to accelerate the UK's transition to a net-zero economy.
