In a piece of research between BHP and BlackRock last year it was said: "By decarbonising its asset base the valuation discount applied to high carbon-emitting sectors can be first reduced and then eliminated." BHP this week published their decarbonisation update presentation. The trend is very apparent (see chart). New projects acquired or organically developed will now have to support the net-zero strategy. Is this a completely irrelevant event? It was great chatting with Carly Leonida at The Intelligent Miner a while ago with Elizabeth Freele. Increasingly, valuable resources are wasted on trivial data-chasing exercises or endless debates over the best way to analyze sustainability data—efforts that don't lead to better performance or outcomes at mining sites. Unfortunately, many sustainability professionals—dedicated to making a difference—are increasingly incentivized to focus on collecting ESG data and completing repetitive questionnaires. I believe it's crucial to pause and question whether this data collection and disclosure genuinely drive improved sustainability performance or progress at mine sites. While data and transparency are essential, they only matter to a certain level of detail. Beyond that, extensive number-crunching becomes mere accounting, disconnected from true sustainability impacts and outcomes. For many miners, particularly juniors, there's an inevitable trade-off between gathering sustainability data and actually acting on it
