Really like this piece around lower cost areas helping to spur some regrowth of jobs in the gaming industry, but these roles don't necessarily have to be in Eastern Europe or South America. Like Ben Kvalo points out, there are some advantages to just moving development out of LA/SF and into lower cost areas even in the US. I did some quick math on cost savings and break-even and found this to be interesting. This math isn't perfect, but still tells a story. Average game developer cost in LA is around $96K (salary.com). If I have a studio that's 100 people large and I move them or start a new studio in Minneapolis (where I'm currently based), you could save $3.5M in salary costs alone. I get that the talent level might not be the same, but that's lowering the break-even of a AAA game by 100K units (if the game is priced at $69.99 and I make 50% in margin). Those economics could be pretty interesting as the industry recovers from this year of layoffs. #videogames #gaminglayoffs

The game industry is ever-changing and that includes all the different development companies that can come and go. Whether we see some companies close completely, leaving masses of developers without a job or if we see rebrands or acquisitions, it is rare to see a development team stay consistent in a fiscal year. An article I read today discussed the rebranding of Atomicom to Starlight Games. In this case, the development team didn't change much in terms of layoffs, but they did rebrand their mission. Even though they aren't partnered with a publisher, they are still working on their own games, but they have a new focus on the horizon now as well. They've dedicated themselves to mentoring the younger generation of developers and to help them shine as they emerge into the industry. They've had previous success working with game dev students and have decided to pivot that direction. Should more companies invest in the future of the industry?
