As the founder of AnnieGuard I submitted feedback on behalf of our organization to the NIH Minority Health and Health Disparities Strategic Plan for 2026-2030. My feedback focused on the challenges surrounding sarcoma, a rare and often overlooked cancer, and the critical need to address the systemic inequities faced by patients with rare diseases. Rare disease patients often encounter delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and a lack of research funding—disparities that are further amplified in underserved and minority populations. These challenges highlight the urgent need for policies that prioritize equitable access to care, increase funding for rare disease research, and foster innovation in early detection technologies. I encourage all healthcare clinicians and researchers to share their lived experiences and ideas. Together, we can help create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system. American Public Health Association, Executive Director, Dr. Georges Benjamin at the MdPHA Annual Event. Dr. Benjamin, a seasoned public health leader, discussed the complexities of the national health policy agenda, emphasizing the need for competent leadership and effective resource allocation. He highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on life expectancy, noting a significant decline and the challenges in recovery. Dr. Benjamin stressed the importance of addressing social determinants of health, women's reproductive health, and long-term care costs. He also discussed the rise of infectious diseases, the potential for eliminating HIV and hepatitis C, and the role of disinformation in public health. Finally, he called for building a Next Generation Public Health System that integrates healthcare, enhances workforce skills, and focuses on health equity and risk communication.
