Thrilled to dive back into future focused conversations for education once again! Times have changed post pandemic and with geopolitical forces plus everything about today's world present extreme and often dire situations around us. What preferred future do I imagine for the role of futurists in #K12 education? Futurists can collaboratively read the tea-leaves, predict, anticipate, and nudge new directions for schools to grow towards. Futurists can look to the past and say what do we want to keep and shed as we create the future. Futurists can play with new ways of doing things and imagine how things might work. Futurists can bring attention to signals already existing in our world that point to changes to come and highlight steps already being taken by courageous people making headway in non-traditional spaces. Futurists can bring optimism, wonder, and drive back into foundational learning and inspire a sense of efficacy.

This is so true and apparent even in the K-12 sector.

All K12 curriculum covering social emotional learning should include a section about future studies. Anxiety about the future is high when you don't see yourself in it...

2024 marked a lot of big shifts for me. I took a new position as a Civic Science Fellow with the American Physical Society, building a strategic roadmap to guide systems-level decisions by their Public Engagement team. I participated in fascinating discussions about the role of community and public engagement for scientists - and the responsibility of funders to support that work. I collaborated with our team to develop new programming, workshops, and an ambassador program around building trust between scientists and various communities. I have been inspired by an incredible cohort of civic science fellows, exploring and expanding the boundaries between science and civic life. I have incorporated my foundations - inclusive science engagement, equitable access, and culturally responsive practices - into my daily work and future plans. I have found community in places both virtual and in person, recognizing so many are intentionally, doggedly, pursuing similar goals. Throughout 2024, curiosity and empathy have been my anchors, guiding me to explore how we measure and define impact while experimenting with authentic ways to connect. In 2025, I am focused on continuing this momentum - improving how we communicate science and build meaningful connections. My goals include challenging traditional ideas about who does science, broadening the scope of contributors to discovery, and redefining the role of scientists in civic life. What lessons, challenges, and wins are you taking into the new year?

Matthew J. Corriere and I will be innovating at the Vermont State Colleges System related to AI training and literacy. We know that AI is a broad term with several subsets (machine learning, large language models, NLP, etc) and that not all users need the same AI skills. We also know that users have different levels of comfort regarding AI and how it stores and uses data. Our goal is to develop a model that targets training needs as well as organizational needs in a stackable (micro-credentials) and trackable (xAPI) way, using different opportunities for learning. We're both really excited to dive into this creative opportunity!

Research shows that more needs to be done to encourage and keep students from underrepresented groups engaged in STEM education. But breaking down barriers in STEM fields and the skilled trades is not enough. There is still more work to be done to even the playing field and create a more inclusive environment for younger generations.
