Amr El-Samdouni: Egypt's Ports Advancing Towards Full Green Conversion Shipping Arabia, September 11, 2024 — Dr. Amr El-Samdouni, Secretary of the International Transport and Logistics Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, announced today that Egypt is making significant strides in converting its ports into fully green ports. This initiative is aligned with Egypt’s 2030 maritime transport strategy, which aims to elevate the international ranking of its seaports by incorporating environmentally sustainable practices and renewable energy sources. In a press release, El-Samdouni emphasized that Egypt’s port development efforts are part of the nation’s broader commitment to aligning with global economic and environmental trends. He noted that the shift toward green ports is essential for securing a larger share of global trade while promoting sustainable development. “Green ports play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development,” El-Samdouni stated. He explained that these ports strike a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation by utilizing renewable energy, improving resource efficiency, and reducing harmful emissions. Furthermore, green ports focus on sustainable waste management, recycling, and the adoption of eco-friendly maritime transport methods, all of which align with the global movement towards sustainability as outlined in the United Nations agenda. As part of this transition, the General Authority for Alexandria Port recently added two new oil pollution control vessels, *Skimmer 5* and *Skimmer 6*, to its fleet. These vessels, which took 30 months to construct, represent the latest efforts to enhance environmental sustainability at Egypt's seaports. Their role is to mitigate the environmental impact of port operations by addressing potential oil spills and improving overall pollution control measures. In recent years, the Egyptian government has accelerated its efforts to modernize its ports to meet international standards. The transition to green ports forms a core element of these efforts, ensuring that Egypt’s maritime facilities adopt environmentally sustainable practices while maintaining their competitiveness in global trade. The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable water access and climate-resilient infrastructure in Cambodia.

Proud to be part of the working group updating the Namibian Transport Policy of 2018. The policy update outlines the strategic vision and implementation actions for Namibia's transport sector from 2025 to 2035. It sets a strategic vision to address urbanization, rising transport demands, and climate change by promoting clean, safe, and accessible transport solutions while aligning with Namibia's National Development Plans (NDPs), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and international climate commitments to modernize and decarbonize transport infrastructure and services. During our workshop held on 4 – 6 December 2025 in Swakopmund, we collaborated with key stakeholders, including Namport, TransNamib, Road Fund Administration, GIZ, Ministries, local authorities, and private sector players like the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme. From a roads perspective, the focus was on climate-resilient materials and advancing electric vehicle adoption. This policy provides a sustainable blueprint for economic growth, environmental preservation, and the decarbonization of Namibia's transport sector. It encourages cleaner fuels, electric vehicles, and a shift toward sustainable transport modes like rail and Non Motorised Transport (NMT), contributing to the country’s environmental and socio-economic goals.

This release coincides with the presentation of our paper at the Australian Local Government Association National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Conference in Western Australia.
