Amr El-Samdouni: Egypt's Ports Advancing Towards Full Green Conversion
Shipping Arabia, September 11, 2024 — Dr. Amr El-Samdouni, Secretary of the International Transport and Logistics Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, announced today that Egypt is making significant strides in converting its ports into fully green ports. This initiative is aligned with Egypt’s 2030 maritime transport strategy, which aims to elevate the international ranking of its seaports by incorporating environmentally sustainable practices and renewable energy sources.
In a press release, El-Samdouni emphasized that Egypt’s port development efforts are part of the nation’s broader commitment to aligning with global economic and environmental trends. He noted that the shift toward green ports is essential for securing a larger share of global trade while promoting sustainable development.
“Green ports play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development,” El-Samdouni stated. He explained that these ports strike a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation by utilizing renewable energy, improving resource efficiency, and reducing harmful emissions. Furthermore, green ports focus on sustainable waste management, recycling, and the adoption of eco-friendly maritime transport methods, all of which align with the global movement towards sustainability as outlined in the United Nations agenda.
As part of this transition, the General Authority for Alexandria Port recently added two new oil pollution control vessels, *Skimmer 5* and *Skimmer 6*, to its fleet. These vessels, which took 30 months to construct, represent the latest efforts to enhance environmental sustainability at Egypt's seaports. Their role is to mitigate the environmental impact of port operations by addressing potential oil spills and improving overall pollution control measures.
In recent years, the Egyptian government has accelerated its efforts to modernize its ports to meet international standards. The transition to green ports forms a core element of these efforts, ensuring that Egypt’s maritime facilities adopt environmentally sustainable practices while maintaining their competitiveness in global trade.
By transforming its ports, Egypt is positioning itself as a leader in environmentally responsible maritime practices, contributing to both regional and international efforts to achieve sustainable development.
