The Indian Meteorological Department celebrating its completion of 150 years in prediction of forecasting weather. Their the pillars of weather forecasting and disaster management. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is India’s primary agency for weather forecasting, meteorological observations, and seismology. Established on 15 January 1875, IMD became one of six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Henry Francis Blanford was its first Meteorological Reporter, followed by Sir John Eliot as the first Director General of Observatories in 1889. The headquarters moved from Calcutta to Shimla, Pune, and finally New Delhi in 1944. IMD joined the WMO post-independence on 27 April 1949. IMD operates six regional centres in Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, and New Delhi, supported by data from India's satellites like Kalpana-1, Megha-Tropiques, and the INSAT series. In 2016, it launched the System of Aerosol Monitoring and Research (SAMAR) to study aerosols’ climatic effects, using advanced instruments like aethalometers and radiometers. Good rainfall in agriculture was the key to bountiful agriculture and food for people. #IMD #Weatherforecasting #SAMAR #Anu💙

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 ! The Adversities are no more in books or limited to conference presentations, it's happening now !! Here are the Dots to connect : ◾ Pune hitting 43°C (after 1987) vs Avg. of 28°C - 33°C ◾Frequent unseasonal rains in desert like districts of Vidarbh & Marathwada. ◾Ongoing Flash floods in Pakistan despite being summer ◾Below avg monsoon led water shortage in Bangalore ◾Dry June & July in western Maharashtra (a water rich part) are becoming new normal from last few yrs, indicating shift in climate cycle. ◾The 2023 was the hottest year China had on the record ◾Cool Climate Europe also not fared as 2023 Italy wildfire burned ~1 lakh hectares, Germany & Belgium hit by flash floods ◾India's water level in reservoir falls to 38% of total capacity. These surprising events are changing the typical textbook climate patterns for a particular geography and "anything can happen to any geography" is probably on its way !
