📢 Tackling Racism in Schools: A Safeguarding Issue I'm incredibly grateful to have contributed to the research stages of this vital report by the Black Equity Organisation (BEO) Black Equity Organisation @blackequityorg and Mission 44 Mission 44 , which was released yesterday. This ground-breaking report highlights the systemic inequities that hinder the success and wellbeing of Black pupils, parents, and teachers in the UK. It sends a powerful message: racism in schools is not just an educational issue—it’s a safeguarding issue. For too long, these injustices have gone unchallenged, leaving a devastating impact on young lives and communities. The report calls for urgent action from Government, local authorities, OFSTED, and schools to address these inequities and ensure that education is a space where every child can thrive. Being part of the research process was a humbling experience. I am proud to have contributed to this work, which I believe has the potential to drive meaningful and lasting change. 💡 Change begins when we listen, act, and hold institutions accountable. Let’s work together to create a future where no child is held back by systemic racism. . . . . . #BlackEquity #Mission44 #Safeguarding #EndRacismInSchools #EquityForAll #EducationMatters

When Integrated Schools was created, our founder, Courtney Mykytyn, fielded criticism about the name of our organization. Why? Because Black communities have legitimate mistrust and skepticism of that word: “integration.” Yes, the Civil Rights Movement accomplished federal public school desegregation and made blatant segregation illegal. However, racism (and the legacy of racism) wasn’t abolished with the simple stroke of a President’s pen. ... White Flight undermined much of the larger social aspirations of school integration and continued the practice of hoarding generational wealth and resources amongst White families. Plus, even without White Flight, much of school desegregation didn’t address or help the wider needs of Black communities. Going to class with kids who don't look like you didn’t automatically solve the systemic injustices that were plaguing those in marginalized communities. ... But, we don’t want these historically unfilled promises to continue. That’s why we do what we do. "We were in school during a time where we felt racism wasn't taken seriously, and unfortunately, very little has changed. Not So Micro want to see whole-school approaches to anti-racism seen as a necessity for the sake of young people who are experiencing the same things we experienced." - Not So Micro We're thrilled to have joined a coalition of incredible education, anti-racism, and youth organisations (The Diana Award, Everyday Racism UK, Centre for Mental Health, Not So Micro, The Black Curriculum, UK Youth, ACEN (African Caribbean Education Network)) to lead the call to #TakeRacismSeriously. Our open letter to the government has 4 key calls: 1. For the review of the national curriculum to take an explicit anti-racism focus and to include Black history as a compulsory subject. 2. For the upcoming Race Equality Act to require schools to have an action plan for addressing race inequality alongside their enhanced collection and reporting of ethnicity and race data. 3. For racism to be recognised by the Department of Education as an explicit safeguarding issue and included in mandatory school staff training. 4. For anti-racism guidance to be published for schools and colleges, including how to respond to peer-to-peer racism, mental health effects of racism and racial trauma. Read the full letter here and sign if you believe we need to #TakeRacismSeriously - https://lnkd.in/ernRMATU

Institutional racism, everyday misogyny, and economic disparities are woven into the fabric of our mainstream education system—and it’s failing too many of our young people. When my daughter’s school hosted a Black History Month assembly that excluded Black British History and dismissed young women’s health by denying toilet access during their periods, I knew the system needed change. These were just surface symptoms of a deeper, systemic problem. Did you know? 📊 11,619 students were suspended for racist abuse in schools last year—a 23% increase. 📊 Nearly 90% of teachers report inadequate training to prevent racism in classrooms. 📊 Special Educational Needs students face chronic underfunding, limiting their opportunities. Every statistic is a child denied opportunity, respect, and safety. But together we can change this. This Thursday 19th December from 12–2 pm, join me on Uncomfortable Conversations live on Urban Xtra Radio as I explore: - The impact of institutional racism and misogyny on young people. - Barriers to higher education for working-class families. - Alternative solutions for creating a more equitable education system. 📢 Follow me on Instagram @anti_racistmums to join the discussion during the show. This conversation is just the beginning—because together, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive. #AntiRacism #InclusiveEducation #EquityInAction #UncomfortableConversations #HumanRights #ChildrensRights

Anti-racism isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a revolutionary act of love for our nation. It’s about dismantling systems of oppression that have plagued our society for far too long. It’s about recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of the color of their skin. Education is our greatest tool in this fight. Anti-racist education challenges the status quo and empowers future generations to create a more just and equitable society. It’s about teaching our children to critically examine the world around them and to stand up against injustice wherever they see it. To Socratically question American paradoxes through the lens of justice is to honor the legacy of our nation’s greatest thinkers. From Emerson to Morrison, these trailblazers have dared to challenge the status quo and envision a more perfect union. We walk in the footsteps of giants when we embrace anti-racism and culturally responsive teaching. So let us stand together, hand in hand, and declare that we will not rest until every voice is heard, every life is valued, and every dream is within reach. Let us be the change we wish to see in the world, and let us do it with love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to American democracy. #StandTogether #BeTheChange #LoveOverHate #JusticeForAll #AmericanValues #EqualityForAll #EducationForChange #Empowerment #FutureLeaders #SocraticWisdom #CriticalThinking #AmericanLegacy #LegacyOfGreatness #Inspiration #ChangeMakers https://lnkd.in/etYS-_ke

Education is a cornerstone of equality, yet for many South African learners, it remains a space of inequality, exclusion, and harm. In my latest blog, I address the persistent racism and discrimination in our schools - issues that are not only deeply rooted in our history but also perpetuated by systemic failures today. From unequal resources to blatant acts of racism, these challenges continue to deny black children the safe, empowering educational environment they deserve. Change begins with accountability. There needs to better policies, stronger enforcement of these policies, and a commitment to inclusive education. SCHOOLS HAVE FAILED BLACK BOYS 👨🏾🏫With the current rise of teachers being recruited from Jamaica to fill vacancies in schools, there remains the question of why the systemic issue of poor teacher retention in the UK has not been fully addressed. 🔸If there are already systemic issues with retaining teachers - imagine the students. 🔸In our live webinar, these young men have shared their stories in order to speak back to systems that have let them down, and to encourage change so that other young Black men do not have to go through the same experiences. They discuss systemic racism within the British education system and the long-term impact of racism on the lived experiences of young Black men. 👂🏾Please listen with respect and ACT upon what they are telling you that the system needs. 🔸Watch our webinar here: https://lnkd.in/eitmZ5UH #BlackBoys #Education #Schools #SystemicChange 🧡
