The sight of major metropolitan cities’ officers in their unique uniforms is heartening and highlights global cooperation. (Chiang and Mao in 1945, Public Domain) When you obtain a government ID from one national government, you normally don’t get a second government ID from a different national government, unless you hold dual citizenship. But for some pairs of countries, dual citizenship is untenable. “President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has cautioned Taiwanese citizens against China's reported efforts to lure them into applying for Chinese ID cards and residency permits.” Because Taiwan is a contested territory, acceptance of People’s Republic of China IDs could resulted in PRC claims to Taiwan…to protect its citizens there. Therefore Taiwan really discourages this. “According to local regulations, citizens who receive a Chinese ID will have their Taiwanese household registration revoked.” And we thought that moving Meta’s trust and safety teams from California to Texas was a big deal. At least the states of California and Texas are not launching military strikes against each other. At least not yet.

The ramifications of the episode go far beyond the Middle East, however. Wifi has become the norm on passenger planes. Whereas airlines once banned Samsung phones due to questions about their safety after reports that they overheated and still do not allow shipment of lithium batteries in the cargo hold, most passengers today bring laptops, cell phones, and tablets onboard flights. Indeed, on most aircraft, access to the entertainment system requires the passenger to use his phone, tablet, or computer. The question for security experts—is whether the operation presumably carried out against these pagers could be replicated on American or European or any other cell phones or other electronic equipment? For 23 years, air travelers have had to limit their liquids and submit to vigorous pat-downs as the Transportation Security Agency or its European corollaries sought to protect travelers against the tactics of a past attack. This latest demonstration should raise red flags: Are water bottles or computers the greater threat? Do computers or phones have to be on to receive the signal that causes detonation? If not, will airlines ever accept such electronics in carry-on or cargo? If Wi-Fi is necessary to transmit the signal, is that the end of Wi-Fi on flights? And if passengers cannot do work on an aircraft, will they even fly or turn to video conferencing? These latest events may have the most profound impact on the aviation industry since 9/11. With a perceived increased reliance on and leverage of the private sector in defence, especially in technology, I expect these and other types of actions to increase in an attempt to disrupt and deter your business from working with defence and subsequently impede military operational output.
