With security now a foundational component of business operations, it is incumbent upon CSOs and CISOs to understand why the business is doing what it’s doing, and what the priorities are, and align technology with those priorities. This will potentially position them for other C-level roles. For security awareness professionals here are three ways to grow your opportunities, credibility and ultimately career. 1. Partner with your security team and become the gatekeeper for any security related outbound communications. You can help ensure that any email or communications they send out are easy to understand, actionable, and potentially even on how people personally benefit. Not only are you saving your security team a great deal of time and helping secure peoples behaviors, but ultimately laying the foundation for a stronger security culture. 2. Partner with whomever is responsible for security policies. Help them create policies that are easier for people to understand and follow. One of the biggest blockers security teams create is policies that are confusing, complex and overwhelming. 3. Partner with the Incident Response team. Few people realize just how important (and difficult) communications are during any breach. You are often a communications expert and can help tremendously responding to any breach. The key to any of these is don't wait for the opportunity to come, channel your entrepreneurial spirit and ask! Being a new CISO can be overwhelming at times—trust me, I've been there! There are some common challenges that I've noticed many CISOs run into when they're first starting out, so it's helpful to be aware of those common pitfalls that so many of us have already fallen into at some point in our careers. The pitfall that stands out the most to me in this article is becoming "Dr. No." "Despite the natural security leader urge to get the hammer out, you don’t want to be known as the 'party pooper.' Your goal: Be known as an enabler of secure technology and innovation," writes Dan Lohrmann. I think this is great advice; CISOs can tend to be all business, all the time. But part of being a CISO isn't just about improving security, it's about improving company culture, too.
