It’s been one week since Google released its AI Overviews in search results. If your business relies on PPC ads, here’s what you need to prepare for: 🔮 What’s Changing? Google’s AI Overviews will reduce clicks to end websites. More searches will end on the search engine results page, especially straightforward queries that can be answered in a couple of paragraphs. . 📉 Impact on Publisher Sites: If you’re a publisher, this is a big deal. Historically, your revenue came from blog articles that drew traffic via organic search. For example, an article on Denver’s population trends might have brought in 10,000 visitors a month. These visitors would spend 20 seconds on your page, get the info they needed, and leave. Meanwhile, you’d serve them ads and earn revenue. With AI Overviews, fewer people will click through to your site. They’ll get the info directly from the search results. Imagine losing 25% of your traffic overnight—what happens to your ad revenue? 💰 Rising Costs for Advertisers: Less traffic means less ad real estate. Advertisers will face increased competition for fewer spots, driving up costs. If 10 competitors want to advertise on a site that now has 25% less traffic, bidding wars will ensue, pushing ad prices higher. 🌐 Broader Advertising Landscape: Expect similar trends across paid social and paid search channels. If advertising real estate declines, advertisers will shift their budget to Google Ads, Facebook Ads, etc. More demand means higher prices for every click.
