Project Management + Agile This is something I’ve been anticipating for a while. Is it positive or negative? I’m not a member of either community, so I don’t have strong feelings about it. Could this be the turning point that finally ends the Product vs. Project mindset war? Or will it just turn up the heat? What’s your take on this? Can we move beyond the debate and focus on what truly matters—delivering value? What do you think?👇
Today marks a pivotal moment for Agile Alliance, and I am excited to share it with the LinkedIn community. On December 31, 2024, Agile Alliance entered into a strategic partnership with the Project Management Institute (PMI), the global leader in project management. This partnership signifies the beginning of an exciting phase of global development for Agile Alliance, now operating as PMI Agile Alliance. Together, PMI and PMI Agile Alliance will create unparalleled opportunities for professionals worldwide to maximize value through projects, product delivery, and transformations. This partnership builds on our long-standing collaboration—including the creation of the Agile Practice Guide. What does this mean for our communities? 🔹 PMI Agile Alliance will maintain its dedicated staff, membership structure, and elected Board, staying true to our mission while championing agility and the values and principles of the Agile Manifesto. 🔹 Agile Alliance members will continue to access the resources, events, and connections they value—now enhanced by PMI’s expanded opportunities. 🔹PMI members will gain enhanced access to expanded agile thought leadership, tools, and resources, enhancing their agile mindset. We are grateful to the many individuals at PMI and Agile Alliance who made this partnership possible. Together, we are charting a bold course for the future of the agile and project management communities. Reflecting on the Agile Alliance and PMI Partnership Announcement When I first heard about the Agile Alliance partnering with the Project Management Institute (PMI), I felt a mix of surprise and excitement. Looking back, I’m reminded of a pivotal moment at the 2004 Agile Alliance Conference. A group of us—including Alistair Cockburn, Todd Little, 🔑 Sanjiv Augustine 🎯, Ole Jepsen, and myself—met to discuss the agile community’s apparent aversion to project management. That discussion eventually led to the creation of the Agile Project Leadership Network (APLN) in 2005. The APLN’s journey was a learning experience. One of our biggest debates was whether to establish a certification program. After much discussion, we decided against it, but some members joined PMI’s efforts to develop what eventually became the PMI Agile certification. Over the years, the relationship between PMI and the agile community has been a mix of collaboration and contention—a dynamic that reflects the challenges in integrating traditional and adaptive approaches. Now, we face a new challenge: the rise of AI. Consider these projections for project management and software development jobs: * 80% of traditional project management tasks could be automated by 2030. * 300 million full-time jobs globally could be replaced by AI, with project management roles particularly vulnerable. * By 2027, 80% of software engineers risk job loss without upskilling in AI. * Many organizations are eliminating dedicated Scrum Master roles. While numbers shown are probably wrong, their trends underscore the urgency for all of us—from individual practitioners to global organizations—to adapt. This partnership between Agile Alliance and PMI could foster the exchange of ideas and create innovative solutions for these disruptions. Success isn’t guaranteed, but the stakes couldn’t be higher. I’m optimistic. The history of agile development and project management shows us that collaboration and innovation thrive in times of change. If we embrace AI as a tool to augment our capabilities rather than replace them, we can redefine what it means to lead and deliver value in this new era. What do you think? How can Agile Alliance and PMI leverage this partnership to prepare professionals for the future of work? Couldn’t agree more! The partnership between the Agile Alliance & PMI is a groundbreaking move that reflects the evolution of agility and traditional project management adapting to new challenges. Just as discussed in the article, the rise of AI is transforming our roles and demands a significant shift in how we approach project management and Agile practices. Now more than ever, we need out-of-the-box approaches to navigate this transformation. To thrive in this era of disruption, professionals need to embrace AI as a powerful enabler, not a replacement. By leveraging the collective expertise of Agile and PMI communities, we can better prepare individuals and organizations for the future of work. Let’s champion adaptability and continuous learning as our strongest assets in this transformation journey! Agile Alliance & Project Management Institute
