I was raised by a dad who ran a Chinese takeout restaurant and a mom with a cushy government job. My dad worked 11-11 in his service industry while my mom worked 9-5 in her corporate job. My dad’s blue collar job put food on our table while my mom’s white collar job paid for the roof over our heads. My dad's work was considered by most to be a mom's work, while my mom was the breadwinner. And it worked. My brother and I knew that both of their jobs played their unique roles in our household, whether they worked a traditional 9-5 or not. Once we graduated into the adult world, of course they wanted us to follow in my mom’s footsteps and make a living the “traditional” way. But because of our non-traditional upbringing, I always knew there was no one “right” way of working and making money. So when I broke the news to them that I quit my 9-5 last year, they were shocked--but not mad. Because we’ve always been a family that has done things differently, and today I'm so grateful for their support. Whether you do a traditionally man or woman's job Whether you have an office job or service job Whether you work a 9-5 or an 11-11 Your work matters ❤️ ♻️ Reshare this if it resonates with you and follow Megan Lieu for more!
How much encouragement am I getting out of this? It's insane! This is one powerful post, Megan! 😭
Love this perspective. There’s no one “right” way to build a career or make a living—what matters is that it works for you.

17h📌 Growing up in an immigrant household, I used to resent this non-traditional upbringing. But today I couldn't be more grateful for it. Anyone else coming from an immigrant family resonate with this?
