Matthew Mullins’ Post

As a recent rooftop solar contributor to the grid, I was particularly interested in the fact that the share of renewable energy in the grid increased to 39% from 37.4% in Q1, 2023. With flexible exports still not the norm, the standard export limit set at around 5 kilowatts (kW), meaning that there may be a significant amount of generation that is still not be optimally utilised. Interestingly, SA Power Networks launched Flexible Exports as a connection option alongside the SA Government's Dynamic Export requirements on July 1, 2023. This program follows a successful trial in 37 suburbs. The rollout is ongoing, with the goal of making Flexible Exports available across the entire state by the end of 2024.

AEMO’s latest Quarterly Energy Dynamics report shows that output from renewable energy sources has continued to grow, while wholesale energy prices have fallen despite warmer summer temperatures driving increased electricity demand. The report shows that in the three months to 31 March 2024, operational demand across the National Electricity Market (NEM) averaged 21,552 megawatts (MW), the highest Q1 average in four years. The first analysis of Australia’s energy markets for 2024 also found that the amount of renewable energy being fed into the grid also grew to 39.0%, up from 37.4% in Q1 2023.
