Whether it’s an anecdote from Steve Jobs' life or a slice of someone's own journey, people instinctively rely on stories to convey ideas. Ever wondered why? It’s because our brains are wired to connect with stories. They help us make sense of information, remember it, and, most importantly, feel and relate with it. In leadership, stories connect dots where data alone cannot. They draw people in, create emotional resonance, helping teams see beyond numbers and strategies to the "why" behind the mission. I have witnessed this firsthand. When sharing strategies or presenting to teams or delivering speeches and presentations at external events, a story about how a simple shift transformed a project resonates far more than a slide of metrics. Stories allow us to humanize complex challenges, share failures and learnings authentically, and inspire people to align with a vision. Think about why we love movies, binge-watch shows, TED Talks, or even a great Instagram caption, it’s the story behind it that hooks us. In leadership, it’s the same. A good story doesn’t just share information; it sparks connection, motivates action, and makes people feel like they are part of something bigger. But there’s a catch. Good storytelling is about understanding the moment and be contextual. Are you proving a point? Share the data. But if you’re persuading or inspiring, you need a story, one that resonates with your audience, addresses their concerns, and guides them toward action. In a world of AI, automation, and data-driven decision-making, storytelling is the bridge that keeps the human element relevant and alive.
