Community Involvement in Policy Making - One of the best parts of working in local government is hearing directly from residents about what matters most to them. Their insights guide our decisions, from infrastructure improvements to new public programs. But engagement doesn’t just happen—it requires deliberate efforts to reach out and involve the community. A piece from Harvard Business Review recently explored how involving citizens early in the policy-making process can lead to better service delivery outcomes. We’ve been working hard to create more opportunities for residents to share their thoughts, whether through resident and business surveys, townhalls, or digital feedback platforms. After all, our city is strongest when our operations reflect the voices and needs of those who live here. #CommunityEngagement #PolicyMaking" https://lnkd.in/gCFPDTXR

Just over a month ago, Governor Shapiro visited Downtown Easton. As he stood among local leaders, there was a moment that caught my attention. Julie VanOsdol, Easton Main Street Initiative, spoke about the groundswell of community support behind the "Shape the Future of Downtown Easton" campaign. The Governor’s reaction was simple yet undeniable: "that’s cool." And it was. Inspired by that moment, I created a clip, added captions for accessibility, and included a QR code for the survey. But I didn’t rush. I sent it to his Communications team for permission to share—because doing things 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 matters. Here’s what’s even cooler. Since that moment, 1,667 survey responses have rolled in. That’s ~6% of Easton’s total population! The balance? Remarkable across age range AND household income. With that kind of sample size and distribution, we’re looking at a dataset that’s machine-learning-ready. Why does this matter? Because we have an opportunity to shift how cities engage with their communities. It's not just about collecting data. It’s about creating tools that provide public servants a real understanding of community needs. So when the Governor says, "that’s cool," there’s something deeper happening here. Are you seeing similar shifts in your own communities? PS: Definitely keeping this video for my next performance review. 👀

Today is World Listening Day. A day devoted to understanding cultures and societies through the practice of listening and field recording. Although this day, developed by World Listening Project, is also dedicated to the appreciation of sound from nature, we at Park&K would like to focus on the understanding of cultures and society. Specifically, the society of NYC in a post pandemic world. It is with that intention of World Listening Day, that we’d like to bring your attention to the Communities Speak project, which has teamed up with the NYC council in order to rebuild in a post pandemic world. This survey is entirely anonymous, and could contribute to data that can shape the cities’ policy. https://lnkd.in/efy67zzH

A new survey wants to know if collaborative practices in housing are isolated cases or an approach that is widely tested out, via Housing Europe newsletter In a previously overlooked neighbourhood, residents took the initiative to improve their living conditions. The town council facilitated the participatory design process and renovated together with the young families living in precarious situations. Over time, the residents, architects, city planners, and construction workers collaborated to transform the old, neglected village and revitalise an ageing rural community. This housing project "Bogues du Blat" in Beaumont, France not only enhanced the residents’ quality of life but also resolved long-standing issues of inadequate housing and community disengagement. It facilitated access to affordable housing for young families living in precarious conditions. They went on to develop new activities in the village providing them economic means to settle down. This success story underscores the power of citizen participation in addressing community issues. Is this one of its kind or are there more? Please take a moment to respond to a survey as part of the SOLVE-H project, which focuses on investigating citizen participation in various forms of collaborative housing (e.g. co-housing, cooperative, community land trust, social & public housing etc.).
