Good Nieman Labs profile of New_ Public, based on interviews with co-founder Eli Pariser, who I've been reading since The Filter Bubble in 2010(?), and Deepti Doshi, who joined from running Facebook's Community Partnerships programme in support of Facebook group admins. What I like about New_Public is they're being tech-agnostic as they try to figure out how to build civil online public spaces. It's an approach I used to take with my clients, until they decided to commit 100% to Drupal and Microsoft for online comms and collaboration: first figure out what you want to do, then see if you can build it from existing tools, and only build something new if you can't. Having said that, I was hoping they'd be more optimistic about #AI4communities on the #fediverse, but suspect they're right that decentralization “isn’t meeting people where they’re at". https://lnkd.in/efJNu6ja

Why is Reddit Ranking So High in Google this year? Community forums have been around since the beginning of dial up internet, acting as an outlet for people to seek advice from like minded individuals. In 2005, Reddit came on the scene and has been a powerhouse social media platform ever since. But why focus on Reddit specifically? In March 2024, Google announced its latest core algorithm update, which now features forums as a sub category tab within the SERPs landscape. Whilst there are many platforms online, Reddit looks to be the clear winner. Why? Google has been clear about its desire for first hand, real world experience to adding the additional E to EAT. Reddit, now one of the most visited websites on the planet is rich full of personal, first hand content that is valuable to Google. Furthermore, consumers are now adding the +Reddit modifier to their search queries indicating a desire for Reddit to be the source. You can read more about Reddit, and what brands should consider for Reddit in our article from Ashton Elizabeth Wallis on the blog. https://lnkd.in/dZ2c_yzR

Can Reddit be a useful resource for business? Especially if you are a small business...? Those who have used Reddit might be wondering how businesses can utilise the platform in a meaningful way. Reddit has seen substantial growth, with monthly active users reaching 850 million in 2023 (DemandSage). This increase in users provides a significant opportunity for businesses to engage with a large, diverse audience. Data from Similarweb shows that Reddit's website traffic has grown 39% compared to the previous year. This appears to be due to increased visibility in Google search results - amplified by the recent 'helpful content' updates. Google is prioritising content that is high-quality and written for users. Content that is 'helpful' and answers the search. It should be noted however that you can't just sign up to Reddit and start promoting, as this can be seen negatively in certain communities. Instead, join the communities that are relatable to your business and put in the effort to solve people’s needs and problems. Reddit has the potential to be a high-performance channel! Guilty as charged! I often find myself adding ‘Reddit’ to Google searches just to find real, unfiltered insights. With so many traditional sources feeling saturated with paid mentions, it’s hard to know who to trust. Reddit communities offer that raw, authentic perspective that’s becoming rare. Who else is turning to Reddit and other community blogs for real reviews? All my brand owner/leader friends—are you paying attention to this space for authentic, organic conversations with your customers? 👀 #BrandTrust #CustomerEngagement #DigitalMarketing #AuthenticConversations #MarketingTrends

Reddit is experiencing explosive growth, with its visibility outpacing almost every other social network. In fact, some research Bart Goralewicz and myself have been doing shows Reddit has become one of the top competitors for some brands' own websites when it comes to online conversations. Yet, most brands are still missing from these crucial discussions. You and your brand should definitely be on Reddit, but only if you're willing to do it right. Succeeding requires a deep understanding of Reddit's unique culture and dynamics. Being a true "Redditor" is essential – you can't just barge in with a corporate agenda. Reddit demands authenticity, value, and a genuine desire to engage with the community on their terms. Wait? What? You are not familiar with Reddit? Don't worry, you are not alone, but I am going to keep sharing what my 18 years on Reddit has taught me (well at least some of it), so stay tuned and I will have you turned Redditor in no time :) https://lnkd.in/eb26A6zd #reddit #search #google

🗓 Weekly Updates We’ve spent weeks researching the best contributors on Threads & Bluesky. This week we’ve started reaching out to around 1k users across 10 pilot Communities on Threads & Bluesky, and from tomorrow we’ll be adding them to Newsmast Communities. To outline our vision for a values-first network, our director Michael Foster wanted to share this: The Hub for the Wider Social Web 🌐 The Fediverse (a social ecosystem based on open protocols connecting platforms) boasts around a million core users. Through connections with other networks, it is becoming a major hub for the wider social web, making it influential for social media everywhere. Flipboard has gone all in, with Threads and Bluesky following suit. Other major organisations are lining up. At Newsmast, we believe this gives the Fediverse authority and influence - so values matter. As we explore the social web and the connections it brings, here are a few principles we follow: Consent and Connectivity 🤝 The social web is a safe haven for those fleeing toxic social media. As we expand, we must prioritise consent above connectivity. Enhanced moderation is essential. We’re developing Patchwork, our server software, with this in mind. People Before Protocols 👥 Even if a service runs on the same protocol technology, it’s not always right to connect to it. Equally, it’s sometimes necessary to connect across protocols to reach interesting people. Federation, Federation, Federation 🌍 We cherish the diverse tapestry of people, servers, and software in the social web. Supporting diverse servers and promoting portable identities is key. We’ve started with guest log-in to Newsmast and will build on this with Patchwork. Amplify Diversity 🌈 To counter toxic behaviour, we must protect and amplify diverse voices. We've seen the impact of harassment and we’re committed to celebrating and protecting diverse voices with our upcoming Amplifier technology. Our integration with other parts of the social web will continue over the coming weeks. Here’s a quick preview: - Amplifier debut: Putting users in control of their timelines. - Broadcasting our Feeds to Bluesky and investigating other ways we can connect and share knowledge between platforms. - Another report on Communities covering Bluesky & Threads as part of our efforts to map the social web. The social web, and the Fediverse within it, has a unique opportunity to be a hub of technology and values. Respecting smaller, consent-based, safe spaces while opening up more freely helps maintain the social web's unique character and hopefully influences the larger platforms we connect with. More people deserve to benefit from what we have built and expand their horizons beyond proprietary platforms. At the Newsmast Foundation, we’re excited to play our part in this evolution. 👋 #technology #innovation #knowledgesharing #socialmedia
