It's always lush to see people (relatively) new to fundraising realise that that they know way more than they think they do. Bravo to the small but mighty fundraising team at Guts UK Charity for an excellent showing at our Supporter Journeys workshop this week. Giving supporters a great experience isn't necessarily common sense, but if you're a warm and caring person (and aren't we all warm and caring people here in the charidee sector?) then it comes pretty naturally. It doesn't need to take long (or cost the earth) to train a team for supporter journey awesomeness: - A quick run around CX theory - Some fun building a pick-n-mix welcome journey (Woolworth's nostalgia) - A speedy hack for creating an annual comms plan - And still time to write a wee action list (most important) - what a fab morning! Aaaand there were home-made brownies (optional, but definitely performance-enhancing). We only spent half a day together but I'm confident this little team is going to achieve amazing things for their supporters when they apply their new knowledge. If your company is still looking for a fun way to support a charity this festive season as part of your social responsibility, here's a great example by Liberty Group South Africa, who is supporting the Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation as part of their Challenge CSI initiative. While the Group's Challenge fundraising usually relies on business unit pledges, they decided to take it even further by adding an "employee crowdsourcing" aspect by creating an online fundraising project on GivenGain. By doing so, they've managed to raise R67,000 already! Why go this route? Not only does it provide a visual, interactive medium where employees can donate and leave messages of support, it also offers an easy way for employees to have fun and buy into a culture of giving back (making it much more real than your traditional payroll giving). The public sector, in particular, local Councils, make up the majority of our client base. As part of our contracts, we at Kinver business Solutions commit to delivering social value outputs in the areas we work, giving back to local communities. This time is not included in our fees and is additional, but is also rewarding and gives our team a better understanding of why regeneration projects are so important to communities, but also helps develop their skills. Over the last few years, for one client alone, we've generated nearly £40,000 of social value activity. Social value isn't just a buzz word to us as business or just a contractual obligation, we try and incorporate it into our whole business ethos. As part of our ten year anniversary celebrations, Managing Director Darowen Paul Jones has already launched our partnership with Kids Village Charity donating 1% of our annual turnover to them in the next twelve months. This is part of our 10 for 10 commitment, supporting 10 charitable causes for every year we've been in business. As part of our 10 for 10 social value commitment each team member will be giving 2 days of their time, in addition to our current commitments, to volunteer to a cause of their choice. Anytime I tell people I work in fundraising, the first thing they say is “oh how much money have you raised?” And while it is fairly accurate to think that fundraising involves soliciting donations,successful fundraising as we do extends beyond that. Fundraising is not always about asking or “begging” for money. It’s about; 1️⃣ Offering opportunities; it about offering opportunities for donors to collaborate with organizations who’s missions align with their values, giving them a chance to make tangible impact. 2️⃣Building meaningful relationships. it’s mostly about the genuine, long term connections you create with donor by understanding their interests, values, and motivations for supporting your cause; to create an engaged donor base that feel invested in the mission. 3️⃣ Creating a shared vision; it’s about communicating a compelling vision that resonates with potential donors by aligning the organization’s goals with the passions of its supporters to inspire them to contribute not just financially, but through advocacy and volunteerism. 4️⃣ Demonstrating the Impact of Contributions; you spend a lot of time sharing regular updates, success stories, and measurable outcomes for supporters to know they are helping make a difference. 5️⃣ Showing Appreciation; one thing I’ve learned is that you can never say enough ‘thank you’ to a donor or supporter. And fundraising is constantly acknowledging and thanking people to show your appreciation and strengthen the connection. 6️⃣ Transparency and Long Term Commitment; it’s not a one time thing. It’s more like running a marathon. It goes beyond a single event and requires a long term commitment through stewardship to nurture the relationship even after they’ve made a gift. (Which is what I do :) ) There’s so many moving parts for a successful fundraising. It’s a collaborative effort that goes beyond merely soliciting funds. #fundraising #myths #stewardship
