Despite massive investments and abundant resources, we still haven't cracked the code of building sustainable and disruptive products that acquire decent market shares. From premature IPOs to focusing on unrealistically large growth metrics and financial projections that are music to the ears of investors, we're missing the mark. But why do some ecosystems produce success stories like OpenAI, while others only do 15-minute food delivery? Perhaps it's because we don't give scientific research a chance. We don't have faith in bright minds. Instead, we're chasing glossy interfaces and not diving deep enough to make the right financial and technical decisions for investments that are supposed to impact lives. Happy New Year!! As we kick off 2025, I find myself reflecting on Glimpse's journey so far. Challenges and rewards alike. Starting a company is HARD. Building a competitive platform is HARD. Raising money is HARD. Balancing work and personal life is HARD. The highs are ridiculously high, but the lows can be equally very low and equally intense. All that said, 2024 was a milestone year for us: We achieved record-breaking revenue (2.4x from 2023), welcomed over 30 amazing new clients, and set the stage to double our growth in 2025. Our small but amazing team of 16 made it all possible, and we’re gearing up to expand this year as we focus on pushing the boundaries of AI and automation within insights and market discovery. This journey has been humbling to say the least. Tons of lessons were learned! I’m grateful every day for the dedication of our team, and also for the trust of our clients. As a recent highlight, I'm excited to welcome Kelsey (Ward) Whitehead as our new VP of Insights and Innovation. “𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐩. 𝐁𝐞 𝐚 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧”. This quote by Nikita Thakrar at Included VC has been sitting with me as I reflect on 2024—a year that was challenging yet transformative. In early 2024, I decided to take charge of my future and step into venture capital, driven by a passion for tackling systemic challenges in healthcare and driving innovation that truly makes an impact. 🦄✨ At Stanford, I've had the privilege of working at the intersection of research and innovation, managing a portfolio of interdisciplinary projects designed to address pressing healthcare challenges. These initiatives—from AI-based dementia detection tools to culturally sensitive patient navigation models—showed incredible potential. But they also illuminated a deeper truth: transformative solutions can’t reach their full impact without addressing the systemic inefficiencies holding healthcare back. What stood out most was Stanford’s focus on patient empowerment and culturally sensitive care models—like home-based care or promotores. It highlighted what’s possible, but also the limitations of an antiquated system that prioritizes institutional ownership of patient data over true patient-centered innovation. These experiences shaped my belief that meaningful change isn’t just about technical breakthroughs—it’s about reimagining the entire system. It’s about aligning technology, stakeholders, and incentives to deliver scalable, patient-centered solutions. VC gives me the opportunity to bridge these gaps—to help founders tackle not just the technical challenges but the systemic ones. It’s about supporting the people and ideas that will shape the future of healthcare, not just for some, but for everyone. The founders I’ve had the privilege of working with over the past year have been incredibly inspiring. They aren’t just dreaming of a different future—they’re actively building it. They’re tackling problems that others shy away from, designing solutions that challenge the status quo, and showing what’s possible when bold ideas meet relentless execution. Their courage and vision fuel my own commitment to make a difference. As we step into 2025, I’m excited to build on this journey. To shine brighter. To support more bold ideas. To take charge of the future. There were so many gems from the Gradient Ventures Founder’s Summit last week. It was truly inspiring to be in a room with fellow founders and operators who uniquely understand the challenges and occasional loneliness of building something from the ground up. And yet incredibly gratifying to be in a space where there is a collective commitment to executing on a vision and doing what it takes. Some of the highlights: ✨ Stephen Balaban talking about 12 years of ups and downs in building Lambda, how much resilience you need, how sometimes you need to swallow your pride and importantly keep on delighting customers as best you can. ✨ Cristóbal Valenzuela from Runway on creativity being a state of mind, controlling what you can control and how AI can enhance creativity in the form of tooling; at one time the paint brush was a creative technological innovation! ✨ Daniel Zarick from Arrows discussed making a significant product and channel bet two years ago, its success, and the effective playbook they've developed. ✨ Ivan Zhao on building Notion with a “craft mindset” and how it started with a love of lego building blocks. (Also admire how much he cares about the interior design of the Notion office.) ✨ Charlotte Kufus from Flank (previously Legal OS) on the teams super successful business pivot and how taking that leap of faith can change the game. Inspiring! ✨ Jennifer (Glaspie) Lundstrom from Tandym provided a much-needed reminder, along with a few tactics, on how founders can take care of their mental health. It's essential for us, our families, and our teams.

Anecdotally, we've all noticed the trend of early-stage companies raising bigger rounds at higher valuations. Mistral AI's $113M seed round at a $260M valuation last year certainly comes to mind. Now that's been confirmed by the data. Although volume of deals slid for the ninth quarter in a row, total funding climed for a second straight quarter. What does this mean? Databricks has secured $10 billion in funding, marking the largest US venture capital raise of the year. This new round values the company at $62 billion, with expectations to reach an annualized revenue of around $3 billion, resulting in an impressive 21x revenue multiple. The funding round was led by Thrive Capital, with participation from major investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Partners, Iconiq Growth, DST Global, GIC, and MGX. A notable portion of the funds will be allocated to assisting employees in exercising their stock options and covering taxes as they vest, according to Thrive Capital partner Vince Hankes. This strategy is designed to help Databricks retain and attract top talent, especially from leading AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI.
