🏅 Fun fact: I was in the 2012 Olympics. Not as an Olympian but as a medical volunteer supporting volleyball at Earl’s Court 🏐 🏅 So what the Olympics have taught Me about working in Healthcare🏅 As a healthcare executive , I see striking parallels between the Olympic spirit and our industry’s dedication. The Olympics is the epitome of relentless training, perseverance, and excellence. Here are three key lessons that I’ve taken from watching the Olympics for these last few weeks: - Pursuit of Excellence: Like athletes striving for gold, our teams continuously push to provide the best patient care through innovation and improvement. 🏆 - Teamwork and Collaboration: Behind every medal is a team effort. In healthcare, every role is crucial in delivering top-notch care, and true collaboration turning challenges into successes. 🤝 - Grit and Resilience: Olympians face setbacks but keep moving forward. In healthcare, our resilience ensures we stay committed to our patients their families and carers and our communities despite obstacles. 💪 My personal Olympic story: During the 2012 Olympics in London, I played an important role in medical team at Earl’s Court for volleyball, gaining invaluable lessons: We managed incidents like a child swallowing an ice cream stick, a gentleman surviving a heart attack, a young athlete sustaining a significant head injury, a technical support worker sustaining a fall from a height and assisted a spectator who commenced labour by the court. 🚑 Yes, all of that in one day! The camaraderie and collective effort of our team mirrored the Olympic spirit, driving our daily pursuit of excellence, collaboration, and resilience in healthcare. The Olympic Games inspire us to elevate standards, embrace teamwork, and cultivate resilience, driving our passion and dedication to unparalleled healthcare services. We’ve seen this recently in healthcare and I have witnessed many examples of that great team spirit and leadership. The Olympic Spirit & running a Business. This is the Official Olympic Torch from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. It's a long story about how we got to hold it today but trust me it is real (and heavy). What a stark reminder that to achieve things at Olympic level, takes years of dedicated focus, determination, figurative 'blood', literal 'sweat' and almost certainly very real 'tears'. Business is not unlike Sport, albeit that perhaps we can continue to 'play the game' for a lot longer. Reaching high levels of proficiency in clinical skill and practice management in an ever-changing environment, does't happen in one, two or even three years. It's an ongoing journey that at times can feel like it's draining the very life 'blood' from you, making you 'sweat' from effort or even anxiety, and can often leave you in 'tears'. Surrounding yourself with an awesome team, a great support network of mentors and colleagues, being focussed on your WHY and celebrating all the WINS no matter how small, are keys to getting "there" relatively unscathed. Another thing I realised years ago is that "there" is not a destination either, it's getting into your 'flow' while on the never ending journey. As we watch athletes returning home after a whirlwind 2 weeks achieving incredible feats at the Olympics, it's a reminder of the power of persistence and the pursuit of excellence. Each athlete's journey to success is a testament to the idea that success isn't a destination but a journey marked by constant improvement and adaptation. This mindset of continuous refinement is not only essential in sports but also in your practice systems and processes. By consistently gathering feedback, analysing data, and making incremental changes, our customers have been able to: 🥇Reduce the number of inbound calls they receive at 8am. 🥇Successfully signpost patients to other services where appropriate. 🥇Relive pressure on staff, and allow them to focus on critical proactive care tasks. Just as Olympians continually hone their techniques to shave seconds off their times or add inches to their jumps, we can all strive to improve our methods and achieve greater success in our respective fields. Wow! There is a fantastic life and workplace lesson we can all learn from this gymnast who just helped the US Men’s Olympic Team cinch their first medal in 16 years. His ONLY event was the notoriously difficult pommel horse, and he crushed it. Stephen Nedoroscik trained in all of the other gymnastic events as a kid, but realized that he wasn’t progressing like he wanted to. But rather than give up entirely, he chose to specialize in the one event that he was exceptionally good at. And when his unique talent was incorporated into an elite team as part of their strategy to win, it benefited all of them. He wasn’t ostracized or treated any differently. He was a full-fledged member of the team with a seat at the table. You see - You don’t have to be good at everything. And you don’t need your team members to be good at everything. Sometimes what we need are specialists who can absolutely crush a specific task given to them. What started as a journey to win medals for GB over the years has become something much more, a mission to help others transform their lives. 12 years ago today, I received a phone call that changed the course of my life. That call wasn’t just an opportunity to race for my country, it sparked a profound shift, pushing me to embrace the challenges of becoming a Paralympic athlete. It was about more than competition; it was about redefining what was possible for myself and inspiring others to do the same. From a corporate sales director to a 52-year-old athlete competing at the highest level, I’ve faced physical and mental challenges that tested me in every way. The lessons I’ve learned about mindset, resilience, and the mind-body connection have become the foundation of the work I now do with Zenval—and my approach to managing my degenerative disability without relying on any further surgery or medication. What began with the pursuit of Paralympic medals has evolved into a mission to help people break free from their long-standing physical and mental limitations. My programs focus on unlocking optimal human performance through small, incremental shifts in beliefs and choices, creating a new reality that delivers lasting results in physical and mental health. Whether it's understanding mental health in a new way, embracing neurodiversity, or resetting unhealthy habits, I help teams and individuals reframe their narratives and move beyond limiting beliefs. Additionally, athletes highlight the importance of physical fitness, promoting healthier lifestyles and contributing to public health. Beyond health and inspiration, supporting athletes fosters unity and pride, bringing people together across social and cultural divides. The success of athletes also has economic benefits, from boosting local economies to creating jobs in the sports industry.
