Kapwa Capital’s “Empowering Diverse Angels” blog series continues with our most recent article "The Role of Angel Investors in the Startup Ecosystem" by our Venture Partner, Christina Vernali! Angel investors are vital in the startup ecosystem, offering more than just funding. They evaluate potential deals by assessing factors like the founder's pitch, team dynamics, market size, and business model. Successful angels not only provide early-stage capital but also mentorship, industry connections, and credibility that help startups grow. By supporting innovation and taking calculated risks, angel investors help shape the future of new ventures. Great post about whether your startup is really “VC- backabale.” Sometimes a business just does not have an aggressive growth arc, or is more of a services business than a software business (read:less cash flow from the same capital). As Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA says, this does not mean your business is a bad idea. It just means it is not likely to generate the type of crazy cash returns a venture investor seeks. The ultimate win is not your venture investing; the ultimate win is a successful business with profitable customers!
Too often, founders assume VC funding is what they need to be successful. But the truth is, most companies are not a good fit for the VC model. Or perhaps I should say the VC model is not a right fit for most startups. What does “venture backable” even mean? More than 90% of startups fail, often due to cash flow problems, short runways, or fundraising failures. That’s why startups shouldn’t underestimate the value of hard work and due diligence in fundraising, even in the early pre-seed and seed stages. The line between pre-seed and seed funding can be blurry, but some distinctions help founders determine which type of fundraising to focus on. According to Oli Hammond, VC and partner at Fuel Ventures 🚀, founders need to have more than just an idea, even for pre-seed investments. “For most pre-seed founders, I would say don't rely on money to start your company. Rely on money to grow your company. I would expect you to be able to approach us with some kind of working product or prototype to show what you are doing,” Hammond said. “That bar ramps up when it comes to seed. With seed funding, I would expect the company to have a live product in market that people are willing to pay for.” From learning what milestones and KPIs to meet for pre-seed vs. seed funding to the step-by-step process of raising funds at each stage, check out our in-depth guide—and bookmark the post to access the top investors at each stage whenever you need them. As DC Palter and Terri Hanson Mead have experienced these challenges as being part of the VC and Angel Investing side of Life Sciences, we at SVA Life Sciences have also encountered too many early stage startups that have received generous VC & Seed funding but have no real plan to efficiently and effectively use it. Hiring talent, or more importantly these days deploying purpose-built, data-driven technology that won't deplete their funds, is key to preserving and stretching your capital investment. An eye towards scalability is critical, not to mention the use of AI. We at SVA call it finding the "Easy Button" from our years of experience helping companies on their Commercialization Journey. DM me to avoid adding to this frustrating experience, and let us help you find the early startup, Easy Button. #VCinvestingfrustrations #Seedstagedifficulties #SVALifeSciences #CommercializationJourney #EasyButton
This perfectly sums up one of my frustrations with VCs investing in early stages making it difficult for angels to effectively invest in early stage startups. The seed stage has blurred to pre-seed, post-seed, peach seed, mango seed, and whatever other kind of seed you want to name. When VCs invest too early in a start up, they also require more process and rigour than what is helpful for founders to be nimble and focus on getting to product, market, fit. We are seeing a lot of downrounds right now along with major cap table restructurings as a result of too much dumb money going in at the early stages. DC Palter
