#Amazon is a key economic factor in Germany—this is primarily due to more than 47,000 merchants who use the marketplace. For over 25 years, Amazon has been active in Germany and has become an important factor for the German economy during this time. In 2023 alone, Amazon contributed an estimated eight billion euros to Germany’s GDP, according to the economic consultancy firm Keystone (though the total GDP was 4.5 trillion euros). Since 2010, this contribution has amounted to more than 50 billion euros overall. With investments totaling 77 billion euros and the creation of 40,000 jobs, the figures highlight the significance of the corporation in Germany today. Amazon’s logistics centers, in particular, are now an indispensable part of the country, and they receive the majority of the company’s investments. However, one of the biggest cornerstones of Amazon’s success is the small and medium-sized businesses that earn with and through Amazon.

Amazon invests ten billion euros in #Germany. Amazon is planning another major #investment in Germany: around ten billion euros will be invested in #dataprocessing and #logistics centers, among other things. Ten billion euros. The US company Amazon wants to invest this amount in Germany and use it to further expand both its logistics network and its #cloudinfrastructure, with a focus on Hesse. By the end of the year, 4,000 jobs are to be created in three new logistics centers : operations in Horn-Bad Meinberg (North Rhine-Westphalia) will start in late summer 2024, in Erfurt (Thuringia) it started in May 2024 and Großenkneten (Lower Saxony) started operations in August 2023. Amazon will thus grow to 40,000 permanent employees in Germany by the end of this year. Just last month, Amazon announced that it would invest 7.8 billion euros in its subsidiary Amazon Web Services (AWS), a new, independent cloud for #Europe. Its first region in Germany will be opened in Brandenburg. With the ten billion euro announcement on June 19, Amazon also reaffirmed its planned commitment to the cloud sector and is investing a total of 17.8 billion euros in Germany . The majority of investments are made in the Rhine-Main area As part of Amazon's investments in Germany, AWS plans to invest € 8.8 billion by 2026 and has been developing its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region in the Rhine-Main area since 2014. This investment is intended to help meet the growing demand for AWS services in Germany, driven by the potential of cloud computing and AI.

Honourable Minister Piyush Goyal made headlines yesterday for his strong criticism of #ecommerce, specifically singling out Amazon. While his concerns about the impact on small retailers are understandable, it’s important to recognize the positive role Amazon has played in India. Their investment has helped millions of small businesses, created 300,000 jobs, and brought 250,000 new sellers online, boosting the economy. Mr. Goyal also mocked Amazon's $1 billion investment, suggesting it was merely to cover their losses, which he attributed to predatory pricing. However, we should be cautious about dismissing such investments outright. E-commerce has transformed the way we shop, offering more choices, better prices, and new opportunities for small businesses to reach global markets. With #unemployment being a significant issue, it’s crucial not to discourage investments that drive economic growth and job creation. The focus should be on creating a business environment where both ecommerce giants and small retailers can thrive. The government’s role is to ensure that technology benefits everyone and that growth is inclusive. E-commerce is here to stay, and it’s essential to harness its potential while addressing the concerns of small merchants.

I published my first AWS-Blog post! When I joined Amazon 8 years back, I was amazed by the speed and scale of customer-centric innovation. Similar to Amazon in the early 2000´s, companies, challenged by lack of skilled labor, supply chain disruptions and other economic factors, need to future proof their ability to innovate in an ever-changing environment. Together with Frank Foerster and Dr. Morten Wetjen and inspired by Jim Collins´"Good to Great", I am looking into how companies can utilize organization, culture, mechanisms and technology to transform and innovate at scale. Amazon has announced a new pilot package delivery service in Frankfurt, Germany, that meshes electric road and rail transport. The e-commerce giant will use vans from its delivery depot to the first tram stop on the outskirts of Frankfurt, with the city’s new Gütertram service transporting the goods to awaiting cargo bikes. Gütertram constitutes part of a research project from Frankfurt University and the local municipality and fits with a broader Amazon initiative to embrace trains. In April, the company signed a logistics contract to use a rail network to transport goods between fulfilment centers in Germany and Italy. Amazon has been pushing its green credentials to counter various damning environmental reports through the years, though last year it abandoned plans to make half of its shipments carbon neutral by 2030. This isn’t the first time trams have been repurposed for cargo in Europe. In Germany, Dresden operated the CarGoTram for two decades until its recent closure, while Deutsche Post DHL piloted something similar in Schwerin, scrapping it less than two years after its 2022 launch. Union minister of Commerce and Industry says Amazon's investments are no reason to celebrate. Well Amazon can be criticized for many things like preference of big sellers in which they have shareholding, running with wafer-thin margins and squeezing out rivals (at least in United States) but why to mention that "Amazon bringing in money to India not for any service or to support Indian economy"? Business are run for profits and not for any social service. That is the job of NGOs. Business when run for profits generates jobs, provides tax revenue to the government etc. With Amazon's investments in India, how many warehouses, logistics and jobs created? Was no supply chain infrastructure created? How about Amazon's AWS cloud investments that created datacenters? Had it not helped in india's data localization policy to make the indian business and MNCs to store their data in cloud but within the country? If Amazon is not allowed to do B2C and only B2B why not bring stringent regulation rather than bringing in some vague rules once in few years that is open to interpretation? Regarding predatory pricing, it is a valid point but why single out Amazon only? Had not Aditya Birla's online fashion abof.com shut shop in 2017 citing that it cannot compete heavy discounting by Amazon, Myntra and Flipkart for infinite time? It is around 7 years since then but why no response from government so far? https://lnkd.in/gC2_TJtk What about Zomato, Swiggy's discounted pricing? What about a reliable radio taxi service MeruCabs that could not withstand onslaught from Ola and Uber (during the time of their launch) primarily due to predatory pricing and poaching of drivers with unsustainable perks? https://lnkd.in/gr6GAq-P

Good morning. What a week, huh? Markets: Stocks were up for most of yesterday but fell into the red late as investors must have realized they were nervous about today’s key inflation report. Alphabet, meanwhile, had a jolly Tuesday, surging north of 5% after its quantum computing breakthrough. Amazon sells cars now. Well, just Hyundais, but still. The e-commerce giant launched its Amazon Autos service yesterday, empowering online shoppers in 48 US cities to buy exclusively Hyundai vehicles from participating dealers. Users can also finance their purchases, schedule pickups, and trade in existing cars all from within the Amazon site or app. Amazon plans to add more manufacturers next year, but until then, it hopes you will consider procuring a 2025 Elantra SE in Serenity White the next time you’re stocking up on toilet paper. Walgreens is reportedly in talks to go private. Per the Wall Street Journal, the struggling pharmacy chain is discussing a deal to sell itself to the private equity firm Sycamore Partners. After it hit a market value of $100 billion in 2015, Walgreens’s stock has steadily sunk as its pharmacy and retail businesses deal with a host of issues. Today, the company is worth only about $7.5 billion. Sycamore, which bought Staples in 2017, could ultimately sell off parts of the Walgreens business, the WSJ reported. $1 trillion to airlines The industry involved in the “Diarrhea Plane” incident is projected to surpass $1 trillion in revenue in 2025 for the first time, the International Air Transport Association said yesterday. The trade group also estimated that global airlines will transport an all-time high of 5 billion passengers next year. Micron will receive a $6.2 billion subsidy from the Biden administration to boost semiconductor manufacturing in New York and Idaho. Also, in the U.S., gas prices are the lowest they’ve been since early 2021. "The highest of distinctions is service to others." - King George VI
