Today, the Digital Identity Regulation has come into force, setting the stage for introducing the EU Digital Identity (#EUDI) Wallet. The EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC) is pivotal in realising this initiative through the Large Scale Pilots (LSPs). Here are the key dates to keep in mind: 🌟 21st November 2024: Implementation Acts - Batch 1 🌟 21st May 2025: Implementation Acts - Batch 2 🌟 21st November 2026: Mandatory issuance of EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallets by member states 🌟 21st November 2027: Mandatory acceptance by relying parties A critical area of focus will be Identity and Authentication Assurance, which aims to strengthen the processes involved. It is crucial for all parties to have a consistent understanding and to meet the same security requirements. Although the Commission Implementing Regulations (EU) 2015/1501 and 1502 define the identification and authentication requirements for electronic identification (eID), they still need to provide concrete specifications for their technical implementation. With iGrant.io™ is actively involved as a digital wallet provider in the LSPs, the consortium is ensuring interoperability with other issuers like #PID and #LPID, along with verifiers to support individual and organisational wallet providers. This will be a great source of authoritative age data for use in online age assurance processes. The “high” security level applied will, at least initially, limit its usability when surfing the web, as the process to disclose an age attribute to each website separately will be too complex to be convenient. And with the EU code of conduct for age appropriate design due to be developed as part of the Better Internet For Kids+ strategy, an alternative means of online age assurance will still be required for children too young to have their own EUDI wallet, including many seeking to prove they are old enough (13-16) to give consent to share personal data under Article 8 GDPR without parental consent. So the EUDI wallet is not yet a silver bullet which solves online age assurance - but it is a very helpful addition to the ecosystem. Digital wallet reality in the EU, massive changes will result for other areas as a result, Digital Passport regs for the EU are maturing at a rapid rate, this impacts EU imports but global availability of verifiable provenance for many products beyond batteries, textiles and electronics.

Today, more about the EU Digital Identity Regulation that recently came into force Worldwide, many countries are in the process of developing digital identity legislation or already have such legislation in place. One recent case in point is Australia which passed its first legislation for a national digital ID in mid-May. Also in May, the European Union’s Digital Identity Regulation came into force, which makes an EU Digital Identity Wallet possible. (Read all about it in the article at the link below.) The focus on such legislation just shows the important role that digital identity has to play globally. One can only expect that more countries will follow suit soon.
