There’s a powerful story to the below post. I encourage everyone to read it
Two and a half years ago, feeling a little ballsy due to our successes in the evacuation of American citizens and allies from Afghanistan and Ukraine, I made a couple of life-altering decisions. I decided to get completely open about my checkered past, and I decided to return to the dope track where I should have died during that past. While there, I saw a ghost, and wrote the following about the encounter: “I weighed 143lbs, looked like I’d just come out of a concentration camp. Knuckles covered in blood and scabs. Track marks. Scars. Couldn’t even grow a beard. I’d been wearing the same bloody and ragged clothes for a week, and hadn’t bathed in as long. I’d lost my shoes running out of an indoor gunfight a couple days before. That was eight years ago, and until today it was the last time I thought I’d ever see this woman. Neither of us should be alive, and I think we were both equally shocked to learn the other is still breathing. The hell I lived through with her sister is a story for another day. Today’s story is this. The last time I saw her, she was in a better place than I was in the moment and she was there with an extended hand. Eight years later, Jess and I are back on those streets where we damn near met our end, but this time we’re in a better place and we’re there extending our hands to those still suffering. We’ve got three veterans in particular we’re trying to locate and get into treatment. And while we’re here looking for them, we’re helping anyone else who is ready for a better life. Moral of the story is that you NEVER know who is going to be there in your hour of need. Be a good person to everyone you meet. Always lead with love and kindness. Always.” I had no idea what that post would start, or the path it would lead me down. Today, we own the trap house where that indoor gunfight took place, its housing a family whose lives were sidetracked for a time due to the same demons we battled, but were reunited under the roof of a house I once called “hell.” One of those veterans we were trying to help has since lost his war, but the other two are sober. And my old friend, Big Red, is a mission-critical ally on the streets we used to terrorize together. We’ve shuttered two dope houses and one human trafficking operation, put three child predators behind bars, and gotten north of 300 willing addicts, veterans, men, women, kids, gang members and ex cons sober, employed, housed, and onwards to living the life they deserve. We did that without firing a single shot, and without seeing anyone arrested outside the child abusers. We just showed up. Nobody’s coming. It’s up to us.

Fighting back should not be considered a "last resort" in the Run, Hide, Fight paradigm. In many situations, immediate and aggressive countermeasures can be the most effective way to stop an assailant, especially when they are close by. The following article highlights individuals who bravely fought back against their attacker, saving many lives. "Fight" in "Run, Hide, Fight" is often presented as a last resort. But that's an oversimplification. Circumstances like close proximity to the attacker can make fighting the most immediate option for survival. When your life is on the line, taking action to stop the threat might be the only way to prevent further harm. These two brave men did what needed to be done in order to save lives. https://lnkd.in/eJAJPTSR Follow First 30 Group for safety tips, survivor stories & more - or visit our website for free resources at www.First30Group.com #activeshootertraining #activeshootersafetytraining #workplacesafetytraining #activeshooter

Reflecting on the October 7 Massacre at Kibbutz Beeri On October 7, a horrific incident unfolded at Kibbutz Beeri, marking one of the darkest days in the area's history. The event, described as a massacre, saw a large group of armed individuals systematically moving house to house, resulting in the tragic loss of many lives, including civilians. The assailants showed no mercy, affecting everyone from children to the elderly, highlighting the brutal nature of the attack. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing tales of survival, with people forced to flee their homes or hide, as their surroundings were engulfed in violence and chaos. The aftermath left the community in shock and mourning, grappling with the loss of loved ones and the harsh reality of their vulnerability. The attack at Kibbutz Beeri serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflicts that plague the region, raising questions about security, coexistence, and the long-term impacts on those caught in the crossfire. It also challenges us to reflect on how communities can recover from such deep scars and what steps are necessary to foster peace and understanding in such turbulent times.
