I appreciate this point of view, and while I understand the reasonings behind it, I disagree to some extent. If you’ve built genuine, loyal relationships with clients based on trust, professionalism, and mutual understanding, they often want to continue working with you - not just the business you represented. People buy from people. I have worked for 3 agencies & I am yet to meet someone who hasn’t taken clients with them. In this industry, surely we’d be silly to end the relationships you’ve worked hard to nurture, especially when you deeply understand a client’s business. Yes, there’s a big world of potential clients out there, and building new relationships is part of the journey. But cutting ties with those who value your work and have chosen to work with you feels wrong, especially when they’ve followed you for your service rather than solely the company you worked for. So, in my opinion, retaining relationships isn’t necessarily ‘stealing’, it’s literally just carrying on the trust and rapport you’ve spent time building & after all, loyalty goes both ways.

Don’t steal your ex employers clients if you decide to go it alone. It sounds so obvious when you write it down yet many many people set up their own venture and then take clients from the firm they worked with. There is a whole business world out there and an abundance of available clients so do yourself a favour and go fishing in the big pond rather than taking from the hand that once fed you. I say this as someone who once went to work with a large fee client of a firm I worked with and unintentionally burned every bridge in the process 😤 You will only understand the impact of these actions when you get further along your own business journey…when someone does it to you. That’s when I learned the lesson if I’m in completely honest. I couldn’t believe the underhand behaviour, the going behind my back, how much effort I’d put into training etc only to have a leaver AND a big dent in the business revenue and profit. It’s much better to leave with your head held high, to stay civil and go out into the world winning your own work. You get much more satisfaction this way and don’t ruin the relationship with your ex employer. You never know when opportunities will arise that you can refer work to each other. 🦩🦩 #BrightFlamingo #Consultant #Mentor #Accountants
