We recently set the last piece of steel at the UC San Diego Triton Center, a centralized gathering place for essential student programs and services. Slated to open in 2026, the 4- building, 400,000 square foot structures feature 1,504 tons of structural steel, procured in accordance with the Buy Clean California Act (BCCA) and fabricated and erected by Schuff Steel. As an American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Sustainability Partner, and member of AISC’s Sustainability Committee, Schuff understands the role that structural steel plays in minimizing environmental impacts. We support our clients with purchasing expertise, including identifying and meeting #sustainability standards for any size project, as well as offering valuable input to the Design Team during design assist phase, which can help lower overall steel tonnage required on a given project. Sigma Engineering Solutions worked closely with Penhall Company throughout the removal process of the concrete piers that existed underwater after the remaining demolition of the Schuyler F. Heim Bridge in Long Beach, CA. The piers were segmented into manageable-sized pieces by use of wire cutting techniques and raised out of the water utilizing a crane and lowered to the ground for further demolition. #sigmanv

The image shows three types of column failures: 1. **Buckling Failure**: This occurs when a column bends sideways under compressive loads. The failure happens because the column is slender and cannot resist the load without bending. 2. **Compression Failure**: This happens when the column is too short or stout and fails by crushing under compressive forces. The material is unable to resist the load, causing it to compress inward. 3. **Shear Failure**: In this case, the column breaks or fractures diagonally due to forces causing sliding along a plane, where one part of the column shifts relative to another. Each failure type depends on the column’s design, material, and the way loads are applied. #Civil #Civilengineering #Construction #CivilEngineer #Civil #Jic

Did you know that placement of reinforcements is very important in any structure. Most failures you see today are not only caused by substandard material, settlements, poor concrete mix etc but by wrong placement of your reinforcements. The right reinforcements with wrong placement will lead to failure in a structure. This and many more are reasons to engage a professional Engineer for your structure.

Bond stress is a crucial concept in structural engineering. It's like concrete holding the reinforcing rod and not letting it go. This interaction ensures that the load is transferred efficiently between the concrete and the steel reinforcement, providing structural integrity. In the image, we see how bond stress distributes along the interface between the concrete and the steel rod, demonstrating its importance in maintaining stability and strength. Check out our detailed post to learn more about bond stress and its implications in construction. #StructuralEngineering #BondStress #Concrete #Reinforcement #EngineeringEducation #CivilEngineering #MechanicalEngineering #TechBlog #EngineeringStudents #STEM #Eigenplus
