September is National Hunger Action Month. And as the communities we serve continue to grow, along with food prices rising, more people are experiencing homelessness or relying on food banks and related services than ever before. Feed the Need in Durham, which distributes food to local food banks and hunger relief programs, now serves an average of 22,000 visits per month. We are committed making a positive difference in the communities we serve. That's why we support initiatives like Gleaners Foodbank's Growing Dome Project, which allows fresh produce to be grown year-round for those in need. Our funding helped make this project a reality, ensuring our community has access to healthy greens even during the coldest months. At the Midwest Food Bank, an Atmos Energy community partner, 99% of every donation goes directly toward providing food to people in need. The remaining 1% of income is used for fundraising, costs of leadership, oversight, and other administrative expenses. Midwest Food Bank serves over 100 nonprofit partners in Texas by providing bulk food free of charge. These agencies embrace our communities by serving those in need, such as: Children. Senior citizens. Single-parent families. Veterans. In observance of Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity and inspire action to combat hunger, Atmos Energy has donated $2 million to food banks to help provide food security for our neighbors in need. Food insecurity is even more common among families with children. In Omaha, one in five children under the age of 18 goes to bed hungry every night. Heartland Kids Against Hunger is working to contribute to stocking shelves at multiple area food pantries such as Heart Ministry Center, Together Omaha, University of Nebraska at Omaha, and more. Omaha business and organization leaders can make a large and lasting impact in our communities and beyond by encouraging volunteering and giving. Without your help, many community members including children would be going without. Every dollar donated to Heartland Kids Against Hunger goes towards packing highly nutritious meals and is tax-deductable.

At DFR, community is the heart of everything we do. We strive to ensure our programs honor the dignity of every individual we serve. Instead of relying on a single hub to distribute recovered food, our decentralized No Cost Grocery Program (NCGP) model allows us to meet people where they are—in their own communities, where they feel safe and comfortable. We partner with 21 nonprofits, schools, health centers, and resident councils so that people can easily access food in familiar, trusted community spaces. Often, community members themselves help set up and distribute the food, meaning neighbors are receiving food from people they know and trust—not from outsiders who may not fully understand their unique needs and preferences. In our 2023 Annual Report, we take a look at trends at FISH over the past few years, particularly comparing pre-pandemic numbers to today. What we are seeing is continued growth in need, as the high cost of living paired with fewer support resources adds more and more strain for families. One area in which we have seen considerable increases is the pounds of food we distribute each year. In 2023, FISH distributed 1,560,603 pounds of food, more than any other year in our history as an organization. Our marketplace could not run without the generous support of our community. We source food from four main sources: donations from our Broomfield grocery stores and restaurant partners, Community Food Share, in-kind donations from our neighbors (which includes food drives!), and purchased food made possible by our incredible donors and by grant funding. All of these support networks allow us to stock a variety of food and personal care items for our families so they can shop for what their families need. A project at Pete’s Garden in Kansas City aims to double prepared food donations from the food service sector, validating ReFED data and creating a playbook to help other cities turn surplus food into meals for families. https://lnkd.in/gDnHb6MT

This project was both fun and saddening. Over 1000 children told us why food is important to them. Many showed us that systemic #hunger issues are recognized even at such a young age. Join Building Impact in fighting against summer hunger for families in need by contributing to their Summer Food Drive. In Massachusetts, 36% of surveyed households with children reported that their child is food insecure. With summer break coming up for kids, many families who rely on school-provided breakfasts and lunches may be struggling to purchase food. 100% of all donations will go to their three partners: Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD), Boston Medical Center (BMC)'s Preventative Food Pantry, and People Helping People, Inc. - Burlington MA to help deliver meals.
