Mastering Contingent Workforce costs took me 25 years. Here's the blueprint in less than 2 minutes 👇🏻 Stop trying to slash vendor rates (focus on these superpowers instead): After managing $Billions in contingent spend, I realized chasing the lowest rates was the wrong formula. Fixating on rates overlooks all the other valuable cost-saving opportunities not measurable by a number. There are far better ways to optimize spend: Programs with strategic vendor partnerships outperform those who only squeeze margins and create adversarial relationships. In my process, I care more about total program value than individual rate cards. You need an ecosystem of aligned partners. That starts with shared goals. Rate cards weren't my secret sauce. Strategic partnerships were. I care way more about quality delivery than rock-bottom prices. Give me consistent excellence over unstable savings any day. I want to build sustainable programs. I want vendor partners who deliver: • Proactive market insights • Innovation and automation • Risk mitigation expertise Program management is 1000x more effective with collaborative vendors and transparent communication. I also want partners bold enough to challenge the status quo... ...yet who also have the humility to understand that continuous improvement never ends. One of my favorite vendor questions: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your program automation capabilities? Why?" Normalize strategic partnerships. Purely transactional relationships limit optimization. Diverse perspectives create innovative solutions. You want to foster an environment where long-term thinking prevails. I tell my stakeholders: "Focus on value creation, not just cost reduction." And for program success, data visibility is oxygen. See how well vendors track metrics, share insights, and translate complex data simply. Can they align solutions with your goals? The ability to understand and deliver on your needs unlocks program value. Low rates are overvalued. I want partners with strategic vision. United by common objectives, my vendor ecosystem will outperform any collection of low-cost providers. "Simple partnerships create extraordinary results." And for good reason - when you have simple vendor relationships, every aspect of your contingent workforce becomes infinitely easier to manage (and drives better outcomes). But sometimes I forget to take my own advice. I remember a conversation years ago, with my friend Sarah (Head of Global Procurement at a Fortune 500), I got a wake-up call. I was telling her all about the complicated vendor management framework I had created for our workforce program: - 27-point compliance checklist - Weekly performance scorecards - Multi-layered approval processes - Quarterly business reviews In other words, everything I continually preach against. And, hilariously enough, my epiphany came when I literally couldn't explain my process to Sarah. So she stopped me with a suggestion: "Why not start with trust and transparency, then build from there?" It's the exact same advice I've given to countless others. But I was so caught up with control, that I confused complexity with effectiveness. So, I started over. And I ended up with: - Open communication channels - Clear expectations - Regular check-ins - Shared success metrics Simple as can be. With minimal variables, you limit the number of problems that can possibly happen. And when issues do crop up, you know exactly where to find (and fix) them. That's why simple wins.
