It was great to attend yesterday’s Baltic Ventures Demo Day at the Camp and Furnace in Liverpool. As a reporter it was nice to see so many investors and entrepreneurs in the same room watching some seriously impressive pitches from the cohort. Not only that, the panel, hosted by Mo Aldalou, was really thought-provoking and helped me to learn a bit more on what investors are truly looking for. To pitch in a room of around 300 onlookers must be a daunting task, but all ten entrepreneurs managed it admirably. Final panel of TechBlast UK’s #FuelMcr24 breakfast session. Guy Remond from thestartupfactory.tech has been talking about the need for founders to be treated ‘better’ by some funders in the region’s equity space, while Elizabeth Scott MBE highlights that despite good progress, Manchester and the North West has a lot more to do to build a pipeline of ‘globally consequential’ businesses. Renowned #Lancashire entrepreneur and angel investor Frazer Durris, who exited Nelson-based Businesswise Solutions in 2021, has outlined how his original business model was transformed by the onset of recession and the need for all companies to get more value out of utility suppliers in areas like energy. Lessons learned from #Germany were also shared by Janine Smith from GM Business Growth Hub including a need to support more startups in priority sectors, while Richard Whittle from The University of Salford discussed how #AI can help support and protect consumers and businesses in cyberspace. The role of high-quality #workspaces to help enable businesses growth was another key topic highlighted by Jack Maher from Bruntwood SciTech. Hey Founders, We’ve all been there Pitching your heart out Only to be hit with a chorus of NOOOOOOOOs from investors. Here are our top 3 favorite “NOs” so far: 1️⃣ “I like the problem space, but call me back in a few months when you’ve got X customers.” This one cuts deep. A few months can feel like a lifetime, especially when you’re racing against the clock (and your runway). Sometimes, it’s just a polite way to delay. 2️⃣ “Who else is in?” Translation: “I need someone else to take the first leap.” It’s frustrating because your idea should stand on its own merit. But let’s face it many investors wait for social proof before committing. 3️⃣ “The market isn’t ready, and this idea is too crazy.” The classic “too early” rejection. Funny how the craziest ideas often end up changing the game, right? Here’s what we’ve learned along the way: 💡 Investors are human, not fortune-tellers. They bring their own biases, fears, and opinions. Sometimes, they’ll get it wrong. Your job is to show them why your vision is a bet worth taking. 💡 Leverage is everything. When you’re asking for money, it’s easy to feel powerless. But flip the narrative: make them see they need to be in because, with or without them, you’re building something unstoppable. 💡 Not all advice is golden. You’ll hear plenty of “wisdom” that might make you second-guess yourself. Remember, The biggest regrets often come from passing on ideas that went on to reshape industries. The power of patience… 🧘🏻♂️ that is exactly what starting a business in the clinical trials space has taught me. The last year has sometimes felt like we’ve been pushing a mountain for 8 hours every day.😴😂 When you’re navigating recruitment challenges, developing protocols, or dealing with regulatory approvals, there’s often a lot of waiting. It can feel like the progress is slow—especially when every day a trial is delayed, a patient somewhere is waiting too. ⏳ But looking back, I realized that we’ve transformed from a startup with a prototype into a mature company with a real product and real users. 🌟 WE MOVED THE DAMN MOUNTAIN. ⛰️ Every conversation with a patient, every connection with a researcher, every problem we solve, brings us closer to making a difference.
