Earlier this year the Financial Times visited Texas to understand the role that #batteryenergystorage is playing in stabilizing the Texas grid and facilitating the expansion of renewable energy across the state. Our EVP of Commercial & Technology Joel Vyduna was interviewed by Myles McCormick at KCE's TX12 facility and discussed the rapid growth of batteries and their ability to meet the changing needs of the electric grid! https://lnkd.in/gZrZnKTS

How to turn energy market volatility into opportunity (If you’re in energy or tech, this one’s for you) Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are game-changers. They trade on price arbitrage—capitalizing on grid imbalances to buy low and sell high. Here’s how the BESS business model works: 1. Store Excess Renewable Energy → When the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, prices drop. → BESS steps in: capture energy when it’s abundant. 2. Sell at Peak Demand → Energy demand spikes. Prices soar. → Discharge stored energy at the right moment. 3. Grid Services → Beyond arbitrage, BESS provides critical grid support: • Frequency Regulation: Stabilize grid frequency. • Load Balancing: Keep the system in check. • Capacity Reserve: Offer guaranteed energy capacity. 4. Market Considerations → Price Volatility: The business thrives on electricity price fluctuations driven by renewables’ intermittency and demand variability. → Grid Regulations: Compliance with national and regional energy market rules is critical. → Technology Costs: Battery cost, life cycle, efficiency, and maintenance directly impact profitability. → Market Access: Participate in wholesale energy markets, balancing markets, and bilateral power purchase agreements (PPAs). 5. Integration with Renewables → BESS solves the intermittency of solar and wind energy. → Store. Stabilize. Sell. This model isn’t just profitable—it’s essential for modern energy grids. Renewables are growing. Grid volatility is here. The opportunity to innovate (and profit) has never been bigger. Where do you see #BESS fitting into the future? https://lnkd.in/ez4WG3Wf

Using renewable energy makes a great deal of sense for Bermuda but we need to understand the future development of our Power Grid. This type of thinking needs to work in tandem with energy sources of generation. Bermuda could be a ‘testing stage’ for smart grid deployment along with battery storage. More dialogue is needed here. Great exposé by FT on the battery supply chain and storage issues. #smartgrids, #renewables, #bermuda, #batterystorage https://lnkd.in/eJbjnNfq

Investment in battery storage systems across the US has surged in 2024, especially in Texas. The FT’s Myles McCormick looks at how climactic conditions that lead to a fluctuating power supply, combined with the state’s low-regulation, business-friendly energy market has created ideal conditions to build battery storage sites quickly and at scale. But are we looking at a boom-bust market? https://lnkd.in/d7SJqnsB

The advantages of sodium-ion for grid energy storage — like cost, safety, and supply chain security — are compelling, writes Latitude Media. Peak Energy is developing energy storage technology for the grid and recently announced its $55M Series A to supercharge its mission to enable the next wave of electrification and ultimate goal to become “the CATL of America,” a domestic company capable of commercially producing and deploying sodium-ion batteries worldwide. Inside Peak Energy’s quest to build U.S. sodium-ion battery dominance: https://bit.ly/4dQBMSq
