Recommended viewing: Today's TEDTalk by Mustafa Suleyman on Future and Danger of AI. Having dedicated the last 14 years of my life and career to developing AI desktop software and smart sensor systems at TinMan Systems, I found today's TED Talk by Mustafa Suleyman particularly inspiring. He is an industry pioneer and his experienced viewpoint resonates with me deeply. He proposes that we consider AI as a new digital species, a concept that is both arresting and enlightening. This metaphor encourages us to ponder the true nature of what we’re creating—entities that are dynamic, emergent, and integrated into our lives in ways that traditional tools are not. Suleyman’s presentation is a persuasive reminder to ensure that human judgment remains the driving force in the creation of AI, while also being cautious of any unforeseen issues that might emerge. Of course his metaphor isn’t for literal interpretation, yet it sharpens our understanding of the essential matters concerning AI. It encourages us to reflect on the nature of AI we aim to develop and the guidelines we ought to establish. The statistics he presents are mind-blowing: advanced AI systems can ingest over 8 trillion words in a single month of training, a feat that far surpasses the human capacity for reading in a lifetime. This, along with the prediction that AI could soon be at the heart of every business, device, and building on the planet, paints a picture of a future where AI’s role is not just functional but also deeply personal. Yet, this doesn’t fully capture the essence of AI. These entities have memory, personality, creativity, and the ability to act autonomously. They are far more sophisticated than any tool we’ve ever known. This realization is not meant to alarm but to inspire a thoughtful approach to AI development. The potential benefits of AI are immense, particularly in solving critical issues in healthcare, education, and the climate crisis. As we stand on the brink of what could be the most productive decade in human history, we must choose wisely the AI we bring into the world. This is a story still unfolding, and nothing should be accepted as a given. We all have a role to play in shaping the future of AI—a future that promises to be radically better if we navigate it with care and intention. For those interested in exploring these ideas further, I have attached the link to the 22-minute YouTube video of Suleyman’s talk. It’s a must-watch for anyone invested in the future of AI and technology. #AIDevelopment #DigitalSpecies #HumanAgency #FutureOfAI #EthicalAI #AIStatistics #Innovation #TechnologyEvolution #MustafaSuleyman

After writing The Coming Wave, Mustafa Suleyman has made a TedTalk comparing AI to a "next Species". After jumping ship from Inflection AI quickly to a new leadership role at Microsoft, am I to believe that Microsoft and OpenAI are busy investing in a new species? AI as a "New Digital Species" 🔨 Suleyman's central argument is that AI has advanced to such a degree that it can no longer be considered a mere tool, but rather a new form of being that will come to permeate every aspect of our lives. It's a good pitch for the era of "Agentic AI" these companies will soon be pushing: 🗝️ He envisions a future where AI companions are ubiquitous, representing not just individuals but organizations, cities, and objects. These AI entities, he suggests, will be infinitely knowledgeable, factually accurate, and reliable - a digital manifestation of the best qualities of human nature. What a visionary! 👀 "AIs are clearly more dynamic, more ambiguous, more integrated and more emergent than mere tools, which are entirely subject to human control. So to contain this wave, to put human agency at its center and to mitigate the inevitable unintended consequences that are likely to arise, we should start to think about them as we might a new kind of digital species." So it turns out not just productivity enhancing Copilots, but a new Species. 😀 📢 "..... so saying AI is mainly about the math or the code is like saying we humans are mainly about carbon and water. It's true, but it completely misses the point." What indeed is the point Mr. Sulyman and Mr. Altman and Mr. Nadella?

What Genus and Species is the AI you are using? I'm researching AI ethics a bit right now (Duke University Pratt School of Engineering), and just the other day I was wondering if there was a better way to bring some clarity to "what is what" with all of these LLMs, AI apps, and world changing AI integrated platforms like Résumé Revelator. My brother from another mother Jerry Washington, Ed.D. also thinks about AI a lot and is a bit smarter than me, so of course he educated me with this video. The taxonomy of humans is below. I think classifying AI the same way could be helpful. Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Subclass: Theria Infraclass: Eutheria Order: Primates Suborder: Anthropoidea Superfamily: Hominoidea Family: Hominidae Genus: Homo Species: Sapiens

Mustafa Suleyman's portrayal of AI's future is both inspiring and daunting. His vision encapsulates not just an evolution of technology but a transformation of our entire societal fabric. The concept of AI developing an "actions quotient" (AQ), which enables them to perform tasks in both digital and physical realms, extends beyond conventional views of AI as tools, framing them as integral societal entities. The idea of AI as ubiquitous, acting not just as tools but as companions and colleagues, prompts a reevaluation of human roles in various aspects of life—from personal health to governmental operations. However, while the prospect of having personalized, AI-driven support for each individual and entity sounds utopian, it also raises substantial ethical, security, and privacy concerns. How will we safeguard data? What measures will ensure these AIs act in the best interests of their human counterparts without bias? Moreover, the potential for AI to accelerate scientific discovery and manage both mundane and complex tasks could revolutionize efficiency and innovation. Yet, the challenge remains in ensuring these systems are developed responsibly and inclusively, reflecting the diversity and ethical standards of the societies they serve. Mustafa's assertion that "AI is us" is particularly profound. It underscores the idea that AI development is not only a technological endeavor but a mirror reflecting our values and biases. As we stand on this brink of revolutionary change, it becomes crucial that as a society, we embed our most cherished values—empathy, kindness, curiosity, and creativity—into these digital beings. I couldn't agree more with Mustafa on that point! The vision Mustafa presents on TED Conferences isn't merely about technological advancement; it's about redefining the essence of community, collaboration, and the human experience in the age of AI. This brings an immense responsibility to ensure these technologies are developed with a conscientious framework that prioritizes the well-being of all humanity. It's a powerful reminder that while we sculpt AI's capabilities, we are simultaneously shaping the future societal landscape. https://lnkd.in/d9gFAmK4

In this captivating video I recently watched (link below), AI visionary, Andrew Ng draws parallels between the rise of AI and the historical evolution of literacy. Just as literacy was once a privilege of the elite, AI today remains largely concentrated in the hands of tech giants. However, recent progress in the field indicates an imminent shift reminiscent of the widespread adoption of AI. One of the most compelling points made about the democratization of AI was there is now a shifting in focus from complex coding to data analysis, AI can become more accessible to a broader range of individuals, making powerful tools more accessible to businesses of all sizes This shift holds the promise of a richer and more inclusive society. Another fascinating insight was the discussion around the "long-tail problem" of AI. Today, with the rapid development of projects and tools, there is a need to develop AI platforms that aggregate these in a manner that could empower small businesses and individuals to harness their potential. An example of a tool already doing this is Perplexity AI - https://www.perplexity.ai Looking ahead, the video painted a vivid picture of a future where everyone, regardless of background or expertise, could build AI systems.
