Are we handicapping our organization’s and employee’s futures? The Microsoft LinkedIn Work Trend Index reveals concerning statistics - "68% of people struggle with the pace and volume of work, and 46% feel burned out." My team's research suggests that agility, flexibility, and AI adoption might be at risk due to worker change paralysis, leading to change fatigue and chronic cognitive dissonance. Perhaps its not the way we change, but rather the way that work itself is designed? Despite all the technologies we have, the ways in which modern knowledge work itself is designed have just not kept pace. If we think of the technology developments of the past century, they are often complemented by new ways of managing, such as Scientific Management, Toyota Production System, Agile. But what is the equivalemt for modern knowedge work today...? If there is any doubt as to the inefficiency of knowledge work, consider this article from Bain, or content by the likes of Cal Newport and others. imho for AI, and other technologies to become sticky and drive productivity - we need to focus on the design of work itself. After all, humans have finite attention, therefore work must be optimised around those constraints. https://www.bain.com/insights/solving-for-the-dark-side-of-metcalfes-law/
