𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟱𝗚 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 The quest for sustainable, environment-friendly has become as crucial as we strive for Secure Telecom Networks that provide larger capacities (Speed, Reach, Subscriber density) along with innovative solutions for Energy intensive sectors like Manufacturing, Transport, Power & Energy etc. Energy efficient telecom networks may have multiplier effect on these sectors by boosting efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. India has more than 1.2 billion telecom subscribers and as we propel towards the era of 5G networks, the demand for energy-efficient solutions is paramount. #RadioAccessNetwork (RAN) is that part of the Telecom network which interfaces with the end users; It comprises of the Radio, Antenna, Power Amplifiers etc and consumes almost 76% of the total energy. Mobile technologies from 2G to 4G and now to 5G, have enhanced traffic handling capacities accompanied by a proportional increase in CO2 emissions. Thanks to the architectural advancements of #5G RAN, 5G networks have better spectral efficiency as they carry more data, service more subscribers and provide innovative solutions. Almost 89-90% of the total expenditure of the #Telecom Network goes as OPEX, out of this nearly 23-25% is for Network Operations; 25 % of the Network Operations expenditure is spent on Energy, therefore a concern for Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). However, it is interesting to note that the transition from 4G to 5G has led to only a marginal increase in emissions. Incorporating Principle 2 and 6 of the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (#BRSR) framework which are focused towards “Environment”, Indian TSPs airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea Limited and equipment manufacturers (Ericsson, Nokia etc) have begun adopting measures such as #AI-driven energy management systems, Hybrid battery storage using lithium batteries, #MIMO antenna technologies to optimize energy usage and reduce SCOPE-I II and III emissions. BRSR filings and the Annual Reports submitted by the TSPs, clearly reflect the positive intent to move towards sustainable Green Telecom Networks. Green hydrogen (GH2), produced through #renewable energy-powered electrolysis, can mitigate carbon emissions and foster sustainable practices within the telecom industry. Moreover, GH2 enables deployment of remote base stations without access to the grid, facilitating broader coverage. Though essential, Targets declared by TSPs for reducing #GHG emissions would require a sustained effort. What do you think needs to be done to make our networks #ESG efficient? Sustaining cost pressures and commitments to #NetZero have placed Energy Efficiency in the spotlight for telecoms operators globally. GMSA recently released report based on 3 years of benchmarking activities with real-world anonymized data collaborating with 17 Telecom operator groups across 59 countries serving 1.6bn mobile subscriptions, emphasizing the increasingly importance of Energy Efficiency in mobile networks. Some key findings emerged from this work: 1) ~76% of energy consumption is in the RAN, followed by Core networks and DC (~19%), with other operations at ~5%. 2) The average primary energy efficiency ratio in the RAN stands at 6.8 GB/kWh, indicating 0.15 kWh of energy used to transfer 1 GB of data. 3) In avg, 1 mobile connection requires 14 kWh annually, while 1 cell network site uses 22 MWh per year. 4) Telecom operator's energy sources include ~73% from the electricity grid mix, 21% from renewables, and 6% from diesel generation, notably higher in developing regions. 5) Active infrastructure consumes ~71% of total energy, with the remaining 29% in passive infrastructure. 6) Preferred energy efficiency indicators focus on site, network, operation layers, and domain-based resources. 7) ~82% of Telecom operators believe 5G is more energy-efficient in the long term, despite gradual perceptibility.
