This week, I'm interviewing extraordinary Bradley Voytek — neuroscience prof at UC San Diego, founding member of UCSD's Data Science Institute, and he was Uber's first data scientist. Got questions for him? Questions at the intersection of neuroscience and data science would be particularly interesting, given that Prof. Voytek's research specialty is combining large-scale data science and machine learning to study how brain regions communicate with one another, and how that communication changes with aging and disease. (UCSD is arguably the world's best neuroscience research institute, so this is quite a special opportunity for ya!) Did you know that taking a 10- to 20-minute break after learning something new can make the process even more powerful? That's what Dr. Lila Landowski, an award-winning neuroscientist, explained, and I'd like to share it with you. According to neuroscience, we can improve learning by allowing our brains to replay processed information. This is similar to taking a mental snapshot immediately after learning something. This replay helps our minds understand and effectively store new information. Because new information can be fragile, it's important to take short breaks to prevent retroactive interference, where new data overwrites recently learned material. These breaks not only benefit learning, but also make the entire learning process more rewarding. To implement this technique, consider taking a short nap or practicing non-sleep mode (stopping for a few minutes to simply breathe and focus on the present moment, or grabbing a peaceful bite like I am doing now). Yet, sometimes the most profound insights come from fields far beyond our own. Recently, I ventured into something entirely different from my usual work—Neuroscience. Out of sheer curiosity, I started exploring how the human brain functions. Learning about the brain's complexities, how we process information, and what drives decision-making has offered me a new lens—one that I think holds great value even in the realm of data. By examining cognitive biases and decision-making, this dive into neuroscience is helping me rethink how we approach data analysis and derive insights. It's happening Thursday, October 24th at 5-6PM PST - don't miss it! #Neuroscience can sometimes seem like a puzzle wrapped in a mystery, but it doesn't have to be. These days I have been learning about #predictive coding. Let's simplify a fascinating concept to make it more relatable and understandable to everyone. Think of your #brain as a smart prediction machine, constantly trying to make sense of the world. How? By predicting what should happen next! It uses past experiences to craft these predictions. Here’s the #magic bit: When reality strikes and things are different from those predictions, our brain recognizes an error and adjusts accordingly. It’s like having a personal GPS that’s always ready to recalculate when we take a wrong turn. Let me break it down further: 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲: Your brain is always in 'learn mode,' guessing what's coming next based on its memory bank. 2. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀: When life throws something unexpected, the brain spots the difference and tweaks its forecasts. 3. 𝗛𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: From simple tasks like identifying a sound, to complex decisions, your brain works from ground up ensuring each part is updated. 4. I'm excited to share a new project I've been quietly thinking about: my blog, Conscious Canyon. It's a space for me to document my journey in computational neuroscience--a field that I am quite passionate about since undergraduate. Why 'Conscious Canyon'? Why another blog? I started this as a way to ground myself in the fundamental concepts of how neurons communicate and how their dynamics can be modeled--especially in relation to cognitive processes like memory, decision making, and learning. I believe writing everything down helps my own learning process, and I figured there can never be too many science blogs in the world. But this is just a starting point. As I deepen my understanding, I plan to grow the blog to include current research in cognitive and computational neuroscience. I hope to create a resource that is accessible to anyone curious about the brain and its computational power. My first post briefly looks at the anatomy of neurons and explores concepts like spiking neurons, action potentials, and the basic math involved with computing these. The next edition will include some basic differential equations and models which I'm excited to explore. If you're interested in learning about computational neuroscience, feel free to take a look.
