Kyle Chayka, staff writer for the New Yorker so accurately describes the enshittification of products and “corporation centered design.”This is such a common pattern now in product/platform strategy. It’s the norm. I can almost envision what those enshittification meetings are like.

🚀 Part 1: Building the Foundation of a Successful Design System Organization 🚀
I'm excited to share the first part of my journey in establishing a robust design system organization! In this post on Medium, I outline the groundwork that’s critical for building a cohesive and impactful design system team.
Highlights from Part 1 include:
Crafting a Collaborative Team: The importance of assessing skills, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, and encouraging adaptability and continuous learning.
Developing Core Guidelines: Setting the foundational principles and design guidelines that align with brand values and user needs.
Building the Right Infrastructure: Implementing tools and workflows to streamline design and development processes, ensuring consistency and collaboration at every level.
In Part 2, I’ll explore how we scale and adapt the system to meet future challenges, keeping our design approach user-centered, resilient, and ready for innovation. Stay tuned! 🔗

There’s no doubt that both systematic thinking and design thinking are crucial to strategic thinking.
Systematic thinking offers a broad view of the strategy problem space, while design thinking, as a cognitive skill, is essential for generating strategic options within the solution space.

To my fellow design system advocates: Next time you’re pitching, consider this little insightful nugget from James Clear’s Atomic Habits:
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
… meaning, if the goal is to build and quickly launch a solid, scalable, and successful application then a comprehensive design system is the engine that accelerates development and ultimately drives that revenue growth. 🤑
Working on cross-functional teams, I've seen the importance of translating between user-focused, micro-perspective thinking and systems-focused, macro-perspective thinking. As a communicator, I often find myself being that translator and bridging the gap between the UX-content side of the house and the product-client side. The best solutions balance these ways of thinking and find common motivators to drive change and innovation. Building relationships with your team and understanding their motivations ensure everyone is working in the same direction to build an innovative solution that works for every person who is touched by it.

This is useful - we need the combined efforts of design and systems thinking as articulated here to help steer us towards transition. #climateaxtionnow#rehearsingaliveavlefuture

Helping changemakers cultivate ease, attuned vision and relationships that thrive in complexity ⌘ Embodied Leadership and Systemic Coach ⌘ Regenerative Ecosystem researcher, weaver and facilitator
Such a useful distinctions described between Design Thinking vs Systemic Thinking. Indeed Design Thinking seeks to create user-centered solutions with an aspiration for delight, focusing on immediate needs and innovation. Systems Thinking, however, aims to ensure the health of the entire system, taking into account long-term impacts and interconnections.
When defining the scope of systems, we move beyond just institutions and human actors. Systems can also encompass the agency of nature and collective fields—not just individual entities—acknowledging the broader ecological and social forces that shape our reality.
In Rooted Ripples, apart of these two, we also offer Transition Design and Future Thinking. Transition Design bridges these approaches, guiding long-term societal transformations that prioritize sustainability and resilience (essentially, sustainable health in the long run). It goes beyond Future Thinking, which often focuses on envisioning possibilities, by emphasizing how we navigate the transition from our current state to a desired future, with a clear pathway for systemic change.
Please visit Rootedripples.com for full array of facilitation and team leaders' coaching/mentoring on these modalities. We are available for on-line or on-site facilitation.

Do system diagrams sometimes overwhelm you?
Me too, here's a great solution! 😅
I came across this gem by Elise Talgorn highlighting the importance of storytelling in systems design. It offers a compelling way to convey multi-perspective and non-linear information, making complex systems more accessible. A must-read for those working in complex systems!
