Though published nearly one month ago, this piece captures many of the risks and challenges in Georgia's current political climate. The points hold today, and will remain relevant from now through the forthcoming parliamentary elections. Worth the read. https://lnkd.in/ddmNT_G4

My birthday made history, marking a historic landslide victory for the far right in the Austrian Parliamentary election. A deeper look into the voters' sentiment polls provides some important context. If we look at non far-right voters' coalition preferences, there is little to no support for a FPÖ government. Thus, while the FPÖ is correct in claiming victory, it is also fair to say that close to 61% of Austrian voters reject FPÖ rule (if we include voters stating FPÖ as their preferred coalition partner). Parties will now come together to form coalitions and this process is as unpredictable as it is important in a multiparty system. We will see how parties interpret voters' will. It is intriguing to ponder what US politics would look like in a multiparty coalition system. In our research we study the effect of elections, polarization and populism on firms. A topic that seems to be getting more important everywhere.

💡 Weekend read recommendation as we approach the US elections Can Hungary be a model for America? In our new paper with Jeremy Shapiro from the European Council on Foreign Relations we argue it may be so. 🔴 Republicans in the US have noticed Viktor Orban’s success. Orban’s Fidesz party and the Republicans have lately strengthened their links significantly; Republicans appear to have learned from the former’s march through Hungarian institutions. 🔴 If Trump wins the presidency, Republicans will likely adapt many of Orban’s techniques to the US context to end what they view as liberal control of the “administrative state” and civil society. https://lnkd.in/eGK5wmP2

Tonight, with a 68% voter turnout, the center, center-left and progressives coalesced to defeat convincingly the extreme Far-Right 'Le Pen'Party. A significant victory for the politics of compromise, the politics of unity and the spirit for democracy and a resolve to body-check elements of facism and authoritarianism. Last year, Spain's center-left and progressives similarily pushed their differences aside to defeat VOX, a pro-Franco with facist elements and their subtle alliance with conservatives. What can we learn from these hard fought political wins to save and fortify democracy in Europe, as it applies to the upcoming US Presidential Elections. We must deeply understand what is at stake and unify like we have never done before against a movement with an assist from the Far Right Supreme Court to upend everything we believe in. It is in the American Spirit to lift our Voice sooner rather than later.https://https://lnkd.in/gceC595B

Der Duft der Freiheit riecht demokratisch. - The scent of liberty smells democratic. Today the German Constitution - the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) - turns 75 as the Parliamentary Council passed it on this day in 1949. The mothers and fathers of the Basic Law set a frame for a democratic society in Germany based on the inviolability of human dignity. Sadly, this isn't a given and the "texts" of our different democratic constitutions in Europe and beyond can't protect themselves alone. We have to do so while democracy is under pressure by populism and radicalism in many countries. What we can do is to go out and vote - vote for democratic parties! The table is laid out, there are many options. The next chance in the EU is to vote from 6 to 9 June this year. Look up the exact dates for your country via elections.europa.eu Don't miss it and please motivate your colleagues to vote too. Let's create a longlasting democratic scent together - can you smell it? © Olfasense GmbH, 23 May 2024

How to fire the EU elite: Well, you have to fill out thousands of forms, meet with several lazy bureaucrats, call multiple elections, form new political parties, form meaningless coalitions, and watch them waste your money on "green" initiatives that line their pockets and take photo ops with celebrities. Then you start over again. A doom loop. https://lnkd.in/ecwSitWY

https://lnkd.in/gZP-Sfaw I just read this thoughtful article on Unherd. It very much remains to be seen whether nationalist right-wing parties can translate their successes in the EU elections into similar gains in national polls. There have been past instances where voters vote one way (likely in protest) in the EU parliament voting, but go the other way when it comes to the national elections. Nonetheless, I do believe that this election marks something of a watershed moment. The old consensus that we have since at least the mid-1990s, with an ever more integrated global economy, one that seemed to have managed to survive upheavals in 1997 and 2008, may now be facing yet another challenge. That consensus that had contributed so much to human prosperity over the past quarter of a century may now face its sternest test yet. I have highlighted that many established institutions and companies are faced with ever more skeptical audiences in an ever more fragmented communications landscape. This makes building trust ever more difficult, let alone advocacy and support for the brand. As serious communications professionals, we must pay attention to this trend and think about how to rebuild that trust, especially if the brand we work for, or are helping for, is an old established one. How can it best survive in this period of change?

Have you ever warned someone not to do something, they promise never to do it, and then they do it as soon as you leave? Welcome to the creation of political parties in the United States! Love them or hate them, parties play a central role in politics and elections today. I explain their history and function in this blog for Plural. https://lnkd.in/gTDv-f-M

https://lnkd.in/e_Y4xiar Thank to the pernicious influence of unrepresentative, over-powerful, unelected, single-interest lobby groups, local democracy is on borrowed time. In this blog I explore options for rectifying this unsatisfactory situation.

"You might be amazed to know that every Pakistani, whether in power, the media, or as a common citizen, is deeply interested in the American elections. This stems from the significant influence the U.S. exerts on deep states like Pakistan. To help you understand this better, I wrote about the concept of the deep state over a year ago.
