Summary of conversations at conferences about AI in commercial functions: Person a: what are you using AI for in your business? Person b: 🤷♂️ we tried to make a super cool predictive model but our data was too dirty. Also our revops team was understaffed. I did ask ChatGPT4 to make me a list of restaurants to visit at this conference. Person c: that’s weird, I asked it to make me a picture this morning Person a: 🙋♂️ still wondering….what are you using it for in your business again? I believe that AI will ultimately be really helpful to many different business functions. We’re in the very early innings, though.
Lots of folks are applying an old model to new tech. They're feeding it the same old enrichment data points (employee count, location, an industry, is customer—all of dubious accuracy) and hoping for a miracle. Old school stats models and ML models didn't work with this and neither can generative AI. The magic happens when you apply it to generate useful information from a bunch of unstructured data... e.g. websites, conversations, etc. That just wasn't possible before.

Microsoft Edge, the browser, has their "co-pilot" built in. Whilst on the website for a B2B tool, I asked it to list the top five competitors and their USPs. Co-pilots answers? - Lemonade (something to do with insurance, supposedly). - HelloFresh (B2C meal prep delivery) - Robinhood (B2C stock investment app) - Starbucks (B2C sugar with a side of coffee) - Dollar Shave Club (B2C razorblade delivery) 🤨
Ha! Sounds like a familiar story. Agreed we’re in the early innings for sure.
Bad data in, bad data (AI response) out.
