I am excited to share that I will join the University of Wisconsin-Madison Computer Sciences Department as an Assistant Professor next year. I plan to supervise 1-2 PhD students starting in Fall 2025. University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Computer Sciences (ranked 13th in the U.S. News Computer Science specialty rankings) Incoming Assistant Professor Jiawei Zhang is recruiting fully funded PhD students for 2025. Research Areas: • Optimization theory and algorithms with applications in machine learning, energy, and signal processing • Optimization, generalization, and robustness in machine learning, reinforcement learning, and generative models (including diffusion models, large models, and foundation models) What students can expect: • Full funding and scholarships • Hands-on guidance in identifying and solving meaningful research problems • Opportunities for collaboration across academia and industry • Travel support for attending conferences Desired qualifications for applicants: • Strong self-motivation and a passion for scientific research • Solid mathematical foundation • Excellent programming skills • Good English communication and writing skills We welcome students interested in these research areas to apply (no prior research experience in these areas is required).
