“These [Green MegaCampuses] could include energy storage, hydrogen fuel cells, microgrids, enhanced geothermal energy, renewable generator fuel like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to replace diesel, and eventually small modular reactors and fusion. “Clean energy zones could enable accelerated growth of Digital Infrastructure across the established markets of North America and Europe and allow the emerging markets of Africa, Latin America and India to scale faster,” the iMasons said in their 2024 annual report….“ Well that sounds great! But ask them about the “bridge” between now and 5 years from now (the earliest that infrastructure could be in place) for large scale, widespread use of hydrogen, SMRs, HVO fuel, etc. The bridge is natural gas and delayed retirement of coal fired power plants, that’s the dirty secret. OK now let’s integrate more facts into this discussion: Fact 1: Virginia Data Center Proposals https://lnkd.in/eFVRhh_V Fact 2: Regional Transmission Line Projects https://lnkd.in/eDpY3VtA Fact 3: Dominion's most recent supplemental presentation to give you an idea of what they've got in the pipeline over the next 5 years (and this doesn't include the numerous projects in NoVA!): https://lnkd.in/eGfBDX8i Fact 4: Dominion 2023 IRP: https://lnkd.in/eCfbPdXK The question we should be asking is are we ok with forfeiting any climate action progress, our water and air quality, our communities, and our hard earned income to subsidize their infrastructure through our electric bills so they can continue to build like crazy, rake in revenue, and work on solutions for the next 5 years or are we going to demand more government oversight now? #datacenters #sustainability #AI

As Amazon and Microsoft race to build new data centers in Europe, there's growing concern about meeting AI's energy demands sustainably. Companies like Amazon are striking deals to secure renewable energy. The rush to build data centers is evident, with significant investments in Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, and Finland. However, the increasing demand for clean energy is straining electricity grids, pushing tech giants to consider off-grid solutions like gas, diesel, or green hydrogen power. Data centers need immense power to operate and cool servers, with energy demand expected to double by 2026. Companies have been securing renewable energy contracts, but grid congestion remains a challenge. Some areas, like Dublin and Amsterdam, have imposed restrictions on data center growth due to grid issues. Tech giants are exploring innovative solutions, including on-site renewable projects and advanced technologies like nuclear fusion and hydrogen fuel cells. While these ideas are still developing, the goal is to find sustainable ways to power the growing demand for AI and data centers. #ai #energytransition #digitalinfrastructure #sustainability
