How does an institutional LP decide which GPs to back? UTIMCO alum (and now partner at Foundry) Lindel Eakman opened up about how he picks on Samir Kaji's Venture Unlocked podcast 👇 (episode linked in comments) 🎣 "Would you trust them with your children?" Questions like this one tend to elicit genuine reactions and a real sense of a GP’s character and capabilities. Non-answers or silence in response to a pointed question like this one can be telling. 🤨 "Who fires who?" Questions like this help him evaluate governance and conflict resolution dynamics and the overall stability of the partnership. 1️⃣ Unlike some LPs, Lindel is very open to backing solo GPs. One of the reasons being that partnership risk -- which is one of the biggest when investing in VC funds -- is by definition, eliminated. 👍🏻 Lindel shies away from backing investors who may have potential to be top performers but are divisive or unpleasant to work with. Life is too short! Follow me - John Gannon - to learn more about the ins and outs of the VC market from all 3 sides of the table.

The average venture fund life is about twice as long than the average US marriage (14 years versus 8 years!) This means VCs have to be sure about each other before entering into business together, something a lot of VCs have found out the hard way. In my most recent podcast, I spoke with the Kristina Shen (formerly A16z), Ethan Kurzweil (formerly Bessemer) and Mark Goldberg (formerly Index Partners) about their recently launched (and vastly oversubscribed) Fund I under the newly formed Chemistry Ventures brand. We spent a good amount of time talking about how they decided to partner to ensure they had the right chemistry (pun intended) and the things they did before launching together. A healthy process is longer and more involved than people give credit for. We also covered: 1) Decision making - Non consensus versus consensus decision making 2) Follow-on decision making 3) The right to exist as a new manager. What do you need to have/show? 4) LP portfolio construction. Great listen for any new or established GP or LP. Take a listen. Podcast link in the comments below! You might not have a crystal ball to prove to investors that a 100X ROI is in their future, but you have this… ➜ A story that highlights your passion, company culture, and growth potential. Strategy? It can be tweaked. People? That's a little different. And a spreadsheet with flashy performance metrics can only tell investors so much about what working with your firm will look like. Investors know that qualitative factors can predict just as much, if not more, than quantitative ones—but most advisors forget this. Not convinced that your story could help you raise more capital? Listen to episode 72 of Billion Dollar Backstory with Savvy Wealth Co-Founder and CEO Ritik Malhotra as he shares his fundraising playbook with Stacy Havener. ⤷ He’s a Y Combinator and Thiel Fellowship alum building a tech-enabled wealth management firm that’s secured over $33 million in total funding. 🎧 Listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts! .......... 🎙 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘴 This season is sponsored by: + Ultimus Fund Solutions + The Boutique Investment Collective by Havener Capital Partners
