🔄 Transferring Oil & Gas Technologies to Geothermal: How Feasible Is It? 🔄 We often hear about leveraging oil and gas innovations for geothermal applications—but how straightforward is that process? One key example is Vacuum Insulated Tubing (VIT), widely used in oil and gas for steam injection (SAGD) and offshore annular pressure buildup (APB) prevention. But how well does VIT perform in geothermal systems? In collaboration with Vallourec, XGS Energy co-authored a study exploring the limitations and challenges of applying VIT in geothermal settings, published at the 50th Stanford University Geothermal Workshop (link below). While 99% of existing literature focuses on oil and gas applications, geothermal conditions introduce unique physics and dynamic mechanisms that may render some challenges obsolete (static annulus in oil&gas compared to a dynamic annulus in CLG wells, hydrogen permeation...) while introducing new ones (high thermal stresses, insulation longevity).
