We have all seen the headline - Sam Altman predicts a one-person run Unicorn The vision: Thanks to AI, more and more people will be empowered to start a solo technology business. The new age of entrepreneurship won’t be about who can build it, but who has the domain expertise. My test: I decided to test the AI hype and challenged myself to build an end-to-end website with login, database, frontend, and the biggest of all - an AI-powered tool to solve a problem. Not a POC (Proof of Concept) - but a full functioning tool. My experience: The only coding experience I have is with Python and R. Before embarking on this project, I hadn’t built a database, I hadn’t built a frontend or backend, I hadn’t connected to a payment platform, I didn’t understand webhooks or what serverless functions even meant I didn’t understand all the complexities of the authentication process and so much more. My tools: Claude, ChatGPT, StackOverflow, and the old dependable Google. My Conclusion: Yes. Absolutely, this is possible! I built an end-to-end functioning AI-powered tool within a month that previously I could have only dreamt of building maybe after a year of learning and with a few programmers to help me on the side. I was quickly able to learn, code in languages I didn’t know, and deploy my codes. Anytime I was stuck - I now had the confidence that I had the means to “unstuck” myself. My next project: I have decided to go after Duolingo next. 😉 It’s a joke but it’s not. I have found that Duolingo doesn’t support Nepali language learning. So I am building an iOS app to help people learn my native language, Nepali. I am confident that I can build it in weeks without ever having built an iOS app in my life. The good thing: I already have a POC ready and am testing it. A good friend of mine said it best: AI isn’t about building. It is about the confidence that anyone can now build the next big thing. It is truly democratizing knowledge. This is the worst AI model will ever be.

I know your feed is filled with takes on DeepSeek, most of them not particularly original or thoughtful. This is not that. I'm no self-proclaimed expert and I know you aren't interested in what I might think about AI anyways...at least, you shouldn't be. But, there are a few things I know. I saw a post this morning about DeepSeek and the way cheaper AI tools will impact startups, especially in the early stages. One comment jumped out at me, one with a lot of likes, a comment that is just patently wrong. The commenter claimed that the primary reason startups fail is high burn rate and employee turnover. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Those are symptoms, friends, not the cause. Lowering the cost of building products might reduce burn and it might address some challenges in hiring and retaining talent, but that just means that failing startups will take longer to die. We can talk about whether extending the downward spiral has value in a future post. We should all know the primary reason why startups fail by now. It's because they never found product-market fit, man. Steve Blank wrote "Four Steps to the Epiphany" in 2005, Alexander Osterwalder wrote "Business Model Generation" in 2010, and Eric Ries wrote "The Lean Startup" in 2011. The books launched a revolution, I witnessed it first hand at hackathons and in companies. And yet, almost two decades in, lots of startups still make the mistake of ignoring the fundamental importance of doing customer discovery. To steal a bit from Gordon Gekko, customer discovery "clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit". Yeah, I changed a word in there, but you get the idea. I know a lack of PMF isn't the only reason startups fail. There are lots of reasons, comorbidities if you will, that kill these vessels of optimism and innovation. But startups aren't just about our hopes and dreams, they are experiments to find viable business models and you can't do that if you are guessing more than you are testing. And that's the real point here - testing. "Cheaper" AI tools means you can test more. SO. MUCH. MORE. More hypotheses, more interviews, more segments investigated, more data analyzed, etc. You can do more of the early work at a lower cost, making it easier to de-risk your path forward and avoid failure in the first place. AI probably won't save a failing startup, but it should make it easier to find a path to success. Most requests for consumer AI startups are out of this world. It’s a pattern. Collaborations often come with perks and benefits, like offerings such as a fruit bowl and foosball table in startup job postings. It's not that interesting. This email might seem “ok” as they asked for a video price. But it’s not. The goal is always the same, but the approach is wrong. They want users, of course. And they try to get there directly. First mistake. One post = Millions of new subscribers. That's the goal. But it’s a dream. Yes, we did it once with a viral TikTok that drove a 2,277% spike in global users. Link in the comments. But that was a combination of timing, the right trend, the right music, the right visual content, and the right topic. With that in mind, it might seem reasonable to get a CPM-only deal or a fixed rate of $300 plus a CPM kicker with a cap of $4,000. No, it’s not. Second mistake. I understand the need to reduce risks. The million-dollar startup playbook in the age of X and AI: (Bookmark to use later 🔖 ) 1. Build an audience on X. 2. Ask them what they need, will pay for and if they want YOU to build it. 3. They said 'Yes' to your idea!!! 4. Build an MVP version with no-code tools. 5. Sell it to people who would truly benefit from it. The feedback you get from them is 100X more valuable than the revenue. But don't be afraid to charge; paying customers are the only true validation. 6. Try to build a community around your product if you can (not compulsory). 7. 'Iterate, Iterate & Iterate' - until you achieve product-market fit. 8. Now it's time to scale. See what processes you can automate with AI. Your tech stack is: - LLMs - AI agents - Zapier/Make - No-code tools (Voiceflow, Stack AI, Airtable ....) Consider yourself successful if you manage to automate 70% of a task. Now figure out the parts where AI needs to be told what to do and how to do it by a HUMAN. That role is what you need to hire for. 9. Now that you know how many employees you need and for what roles, hire the absolute best: people who are smarter and better than you. 10. Play as a team. 11. CRUSH it!! Starting a startup has never been easier. On the other hand, competition has never been so fierce. Only having a good product is not enough anymore. "Mediocre product + Great Distribution" beats "Great Product + Weak Distribution". And this is the basic essence of this post.
