Kamikaze Shoplifting? I learned a new term today! UK Retailers say "Shoplifters 'out of control' and becoming more brazen." A style of shoplifting now known as Kamikaze Shoplifting where criminals are openly clearing shelves of product in full view of shoppers is sweeping the UK according to a new article by the BBC. Journalists Cherry Wilson and Jim Connolly's recent BBC piece describes a shocking rise in reported theft incidents in the #retail space. They note, "In the 12 months to September last year, incidents of customer theft reported by retailers in the UK rose by 3.7 million to 20.4 million, and cost retailers £2bn." Wow. And violence and abuse incidents towards shopworkers occurred on average 2,000 times a day, a 50% increase yoy. Keeping retail staff safe while partnering w/ local law enforcement's investigative efforts has never been more important. That's why our mission of Solving for Safer here at Motorola Solutions has never been more urgent. From Body Worn Cameras like our V200 to Panic Buttons and Incident Mangement / Investigation / Crisis Management solutions like Noggin we are deeply committed to helping the retail industry provide safer workplaces for employees and shoppers. 🔆Walmart is the latest retailer to delve into the Body Worn Camera testing phase. As #OrganizedRetailCrime continues to plague retailers, I anticipate more and more retailers will continue to explore the idea of adding BWC’s for employees. This of course will raise privacy concerns for retailers who have to navigate. 🔋How Can BWCs Help Retailers 🔋 ➡️ Theft Prevention – A visible deterrent to shoplifting and internal theft. ➡️Enhanced Safety – Protecting employees in high-risk situations. ➡️Training Opportunities – Leveraging footage for staff development and customer service growth opoortunities #Retailers #ORC #BodyWornCameras #LossPrevention https://lnkd.in/eMAtZ4z9

#Retailers reported a 93 percent increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 versus 2019 and a 90 percent increase in dollars lost due to shoplifting over the same time period, according to a new study released by the National Retail Federation (NRF). Conducted in partnership with the Loss Prevention Research Council and sponsored by Sensormatic Solutions, “The Impact of Retail Theft & Violence 2024” examines how theft and violence have evolved since before COVID-19 and how retailers are combating today’s retail crime landscape. “Retailers continue to navigate a rising retail theft landscape that has evolved significantly over time,” said NRF Vice President for Asset Protection and Retail Operations David Johnston. “Protecting store associates and customers, coupled with reducing today’s levels of violence and retail crime, requires a whole-community approach and collaboration across all stakeholders.” #RetailCrime #LawEnforcement #Pandemic #Violence #Safety

Trending- In recent months, the issue of shoplifting has increasingly become a significant concern across the United States. Retailers are grappling with a surge in theft that not only impacts their bottom line but also affects consumer experience and employee safety. Here are some key points on this pressing topic: **1. **Increase in Incidents: Recent reports indicate a marked rise in shoplifting incidents nationwide. The National Association for Shoplifting Prevention (NASP) notes that more than $13 billion worth of goods are stolen from retailers annually, and this trend is escalating. **2. **Organized Retail Crime (ORC): Unlike petty theft, organized retail crime involves coordinated efforts by professional thieves targeting high-value items for resale. This type of crime is more sophisticated and challenging to combat, often requiring retailers to invest in advanced security measures and collaborate with law enforcement. **3. **Impact on Retailers and Consumers: The financial toll on retailers is substantial, with losses sometimes leading to store closures or reduced staff hours. For consumers, this can mean higher prices as businesses attempt to offset their losses. **4. **Technological Solutions: To counteract shoplifting, many retailers are turning to technology. Innovations such as AI-powered surveillance systems, electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags, and facial recognition software are being implemented to deter and detect theft more effectively. **5. **Legislative Responses: In response to the growing problem, some states are enacting stricter laws and increasing penalties for shoplifting and organized retail crime. These measures aim to provide a stronger deterrent and support law enforcement efforts in tackling this issue. **6. **Community Involvement: Retailers are also engaging with local communities to raise awareness and foster cooperation in preventing theft. Community watch programs and partnerships with local authorities can play a crucial role in reducing shoplifting incidents. As shoplifting continues to pose a significant challenge, it is crucial for retailers, law enforcement, and communities to work together in developing comprehensive strategies to mitigate its impact. By leveraging technology, enacting robust policies, and fostering community engagement, we can better address this growing concern and support the sustainability of our retail industry. The latest release from the Office for National Statistics has shown shoplifting figures at a new record high, reaching almost half a million incidents in the year to March. The official figures are still playing catch up to the reality of what's happening on the ground. 500,000 thefts in the convenience sector alone would equate to less than one incident a month per store (!) The actual extent of theft is more than 10x this, which is why it's so important to keep reporting - only then will the police get a more accurate picture of what's going on. https://lnkd.in/dPDuAff9

A recent article by The Daily Mail highlights the alarming findings from the Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, Britain's Shoplifting Gangs Exposed. The documentary reveals how retailers across the UK are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated Organised Retail Crime (ORC) gangs. Pushouts are an increasingly common and costly form of retail theft, where criminals orchestrate large-scale theft operations and walk out of stores with unpaid goods in shopping trolleys. This type of theft not only results in significant financial losses but also disrupts daily operations for retailers. To address this growing challenge, we're offering innovative solutions like our Purchek® technology that stops theft in a safe, non-confrontational way. 🛒 ❗ By combining advanced technology, staff training, and visible deterrents, retailers can better protect their stores while ensuring a positive shopping experience for customers. As retailers grapple with shrink and theft, the data used to measure these issues is becoming increasingly unreliable, and we're left with more questions than answers. While organized retail crime, shoplifting, and cargo theft remain concerns, self-checkout policies, locked merchandise, and loss prevention strategies are evolving in response. With fewer retailers reporting shrink data and changing public policy, what’s next in the fight against retail crime? #RetailCrime #Shrink #LossPrevention #RetailTrends #OrganizedRetailCrime #RetailNews

1moThanks for sharing! Retailers certainly face a complex and evolving challenge when it comes to theft prevention. More stores are locking up products, but Walgreens' recent mea culpa highlights the downsides of this. I'm very interested in CVS's strategy of using their app to unlock products, as it aims to strike a balance between security and convenience. Ultimately- I believe the best solution will not only deter theft but also ensure a seamless shopping experience, while keeping the store's most valuable asset safe - the employee.
