How important is it to you to build productive working relationships with people who see things differently? A recent study found that “compatibility” is the #1 motivator for friendship—no surprise, since when we feel “known” and understood, it’s easier to trust and connect. But in today’s workplace, differing opinions and diverse perspectives are more common than ever, and they can bring us both closer to some colleagues and at odds with others. Here’s what I keep coming back to: Agreement isn’t essential for strong working relationships, but feeling respected and valued by each other is. True collaboration isn’t about always being on the same page; it’s about creating an environment where people feel safe to express ideas, knowing they’ll be heard without judgment. So I’m curious—how important is it to you to work well with people who disagree with you? And what practices make that possible?

It’s so important to always try to assume good intentions. I don’t think many people turn up to work with an intention to upset others and really believe the majority of people turn up to work trying to do a great job. The context they are doing it in will impact their behaviour and their performance so it’s best to start from a positive mindset about others and get curious and engage in a learning conversation if there are issues. #leadself #leadership
