First Solar opened its new $1.1 billion fully integrated thin-film solar factory in Lawrence County, Alabama. This move adds a substantial 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar manufacturing capacity to the US market and is anticipated to generate more than 800 jobs. Supported by the #InflationReductionAct, this initiative marks a significant step towards bolstering the country's renewable energy sector. One key feature that sets First Solar apart is its full vertical integration in thin-film PV solar panel manufacturing. With the capability to transform glass into a functional solar panel in just four hours, the company relies heavily on US-sourced materials, including locally-sourced glass and steel within a 25-mile radius of the factory. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R-AL) expressed optimism, stating that this production facility is poised to make a substantial impact in the US #renewableenergy landscape. #solarenergy

Another US #Solar Market Insight report is out, highlighting a record-breaking first quarter! But the same growth won't last - the major challenges for the solar industry are now broader power industry challenges. Labor availability, constraints on high-voltage equipment, elevated interest rates, and interconnection delays keep our growth outlook relatively flat. Higher growth for the US solar industry hinges on solving these critical challenges! Read more in our full report. 👇 Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables Solar Energy Industries Association

The U.S. added 11 GW of new solar module manufacturing capacity in Q1 2024, the largest quarter of solar manufacturing growth in American history. Solar accounted for 75% of all new electricity-generating capacity added to the grid. Total U.S. solar capacity is expected to double over the next five years, growing to 438 GW by 2029.

The First Solar factory adds 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of fully vertically integrated nameplate solar manufacturing capacity to the US, and it’s expected to create over 800 jobs. The project was first announced in November 2022 following the passing of the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act. #FirstSolar’s unique selling point is that it’s a fully vertically integrated manufacturer of thin-film PV solar panels. This means they can turn a sheet of glass into a functional solar panel in about four hours, relying heavily on US-sourced materials like glass and steel, the latter of which is being sourced within a 25-mile radius of the new factory. https://lnkd.in/gg6ge27k

Given all of the recent supply chain issues in the US Solar Industry, specifically related to the lack of solar panels, A TON of developers and EPC's are forced to delay their projects until the supply-chain is fixed. Fortunately, companies like First Solar are truly taking strides to bring the manufacturing of Solar Panels domestic and not only bring TONS of new jobs to the industry, but also it will hopefully make a dent in the supply chain issues that is causing so many delays #renewables #solar #domestic
