✍ For this week’s “A Look Back,” there have been quite a few Executive Orders (EOs) issued since President Trump took office on Monday. As of late Thursday evening, there were a total of 57 Presidential Actions listed on https://lnkd.in/eT2jmdAy. Here are three (3) that stood out to me: ❗Declassifying the records concerning the assassinations of JFK, RFK, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — This has been a long time coming, so it will be interesting to see what information is released to the public. I’m sure anyone who’s dabbled in the various conspiracy theories here are also sitting at the edge of their seats! ‼️The EO titled “defending women from gender ideology extremism and restoring biological truth to the Federal Government.” As a former southern Baptist Pastor with a Master’s in Theology, let’s straight up call this what it is: this is a political attack, birthed from a culture war stemmed from a conservative theological interpretation within Christianity, that will continue to target NOT cisgender women – as the title suggests – but rather our transgender and non-binary siblings…friends…neighbors. And let me just say this: following a dude whose greatest sermon and mandate was simply to, “love God and love people,” the belief buried in this EO does quite the opposite! ⁉️Lastly, the 3rd that stuck out to me was “withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization.” As someone who has worked in housing and homelessness policy for the better part of a decade and, more specifically, healthcare public policy during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this one has me scratching my head. But I digress. 🗣️Enough about my opinions. Whether it’s something mentioned above or something else from the long list to choose from, what Executive Order(s) stood out to YOU the most, and why? Today, as we observe September 11th, we pause to reflect on a day that forever changed the course of history. It’s a day to honor those who lost their lives and to pay tribute to the countless acts of heroism and solidarity that emerged in the aftermath. It is hard to believe anyone would be making their minds up today. That said, this Republican believes you should vote for Kamala Harris. Why? I'm glad you asked. Kamala Harris has shown a genuine commitment to bringing people together and focusing on what we share as Americans. She’s spoken about forming a bipartisan council of advisers to ensure voices from across the political spectrum are heard in her administration, which is something I value. She’s also proven she’s open to practical solutions on big issues like infrastructure and economic stability, issues that matter to me as a conservative who wants to see a strong, resilient America. I also appreciate her dedication to national security and economic stability, which have always been important Republican principles. For me, Kamala Harris represents a rare chance to move beyond the polarized, party-first mentality that’s been holding our country back. Supporting her feels like an opportunity to be part of a team effort toward solutions that benefit all Americans. I believe she can be a leader who respects Republican values while working to unify our nation. And just in case you need a reminder on why this is a better outcome for ALL Americans, Donald Trump often embodies the opposite of what Republicans look for in a leader. His approach to leadership has often been divisive, marked by rhetoric that amplifies polarization rather than seeks common ground. While some support him for his straightforward style, others find that this approach alienates large groups of Americans, even within his own party. Instead of building bridges, Trump’s language and policies have often intensified conflicts, whether it’s in discussions about immigration, race, or international relations. In terms of governance, Trump has almost always prioritized his personal interests and brand, creating a sense of unpredictability that can destabilize the very institutions and systems many conservatives value. His decisions often seem reactive, driven by headlines or personal grievances, rather than part of a broader, thoughtful plan. This lack of a steady approach stands in stark contrast to the values of fiscal responsibility, strong national security, and ethical leadership that many Republicans look for. For Republicans wanting someone who respects American institutions and values teamwork and pragmatic solutions, Trump’s approach may seem like the opposite path—one that fractures rather than fortifies. Lifting up my relative General John Fulton Reynolds on this Memorial Day (along with the connection between the Civil War and civil rights). A respected senior commander in the Union Army, Reynolds was key in committing the Army to the Battle of Gettysburg (where he unfortunately died). Resistant to the politics of Washington, D.C., Reynolds previously declined President Abraham Lincoln’s request that he command the Army of the Potomac (the penchant to buck bureaucracy remains strong in his family). Today, you can see him standing resolutely in places throughout Pennsylvania (including in front of Philadelphia’s City Hall). Many think that the Civil War was a long ago moment in time - separate and apart from who we are today. Columbia University Professor Barbara Fields corrects this misguided notion: “I think what we need to remember, most of all, is that the Civil War is not over until we, today, have done our part in fighting it, as well as understanding what happened when the Civil War generation fought it. William Faulkner said once that history is not “was,” it’s “is,” and what we need to remember about the Civil War is that the Civil War “is,” in the present, as well as the past. The generation that fought the war, the generation that argued over the definition of the war, the generation that had to pay the price in blood, that had to pay the price in blasted hopes and a lost future also established a standard that will not mean anything until we finish the work. You can say there’s no such thing as slavery anymore, we’re all citizens. But if we’re all citizens, then we have a task to do to make sure that that, too, is not a joke. If some citizens live in houses and others live on the street, the Civil War is still going on.
