As I look back upon my professional career over the last 30 years, there is only one role where I can say that what I did every day was working to make the world a better place. It was an honour and privilege to have served the first four years of my career for you President Carter. With a quiet reverence, he instilled a sense of purpose among all of us who worked alongside him at The Carter Center to share his and Rosalynn’s vision for a better world. Whether it was resolving conflicts among warring parties, eradicating diseases in the Global South, or leading dozens of electoral monitoring missions to ensure free and fair elections in fledgling democracies throughout the world, former President Carter served as a beacon for all of us who worked for him. May you rest in peace and your light continue to shine.
My new neighbor was head of Habitat for Humanity in NYC and tells his story of meeting President Carter and "recruiting" him for the effort, in so doing transforming HFH forever. Incredibly, the President ended up pitching in personally, once spending more than a week on site in NYC, hammer in hand, building homes for people. What a mensch. RIP. https://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2024/12/jimmys-hammer-how-president-carter-got-started-with-habitat-for-humanity/
Great picture, Jay - as a Brazilian, following US politics using a zoom lens, I can affirm that President Carter was a true statesman. From nuclear deescalation, to the first Middle East peace agreement, he was far ahead of his time. Great loss. Great to know about that step in your career. Good start, bro :-) Abraço
Love you, buddy. That's so awesome.
